About you and this role:
We are looking for a Ph.D. level experienced environmental scientist/consultant who is excited about working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team as a member of a world-class chemical industry product safety assessment expertise unit with long-standing history and scientific reputation.
The role posted is aligned to Dow's Toxicology & Environmental Research & Consulting group (TERC), which is part of the Dow’s EH&S & Sustainability function. TERC is committed to ensuring the safety of Dow products for humans and the environment, and contributes to Sustainability. Primary responsibilities:
- Address product regulatory/compliance and sustainability needs of Dow business units
- Provide technical knowledge to define and assess potential environmental hazards, environmental exposures and risks associated with Dow products, product markets, innovations, processes, and wastes
- Provide expert scientific review and interpretation of environmental data, research reports and publications, and assist Dow businesses with regulatory compliance and the safe use of Dow’s products
- Organize/monitor and conduct environmental fate and toxicology research projects while interfacing with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide leadership in environmental research of interest to Dow businesses
- Establish expertise to lead environmental science areas of interest to Dow businesses within and outside of the company, particularly plastics and microplastics
- Interface with government agencies and policy makers
- Interact with appropriate industry trade associations
- Build strong network and collaborations with academia and research institutions
- Presentation of scientific research at technical symposia and in peer-reviewed publications is expected in this position
Required qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Chemistry or related scientific discipline (Microbiology, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, etc.)
- At least 6 years of experience performing environmental safety assessment
- A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with plastics and microplastics is a plus
Skills, knowledge, and abilities:
- Understanding of global chemical regulatory requirements (i.e., EU REACH & CLP, USEPA TSCA, Canadian DSL, and recent China and Korea programs) for purposes of product testing and registration
- A broad knowledge base in environmental science, environmental chemistry, environmental toxicology, environmental fate and transport
- Expertise in product safety environmental testing for regulatory purposes and regulatory guideline studies
- Knowledgeable of environmental fate parameters including the movement of chemicals in air, water, and subsurface and of the physical, chemical, and biological processes that influence the ultimate disposition of chemicals in the environment
- Ability to understand and translate environmental fate, transport and ecotoxicological information into recommendations and clear messages for both scientific and non-scientific audiences
- Strong English written and oral communication skills that allow dissemination of complex technical issues in a clear, concise manner
- A team player who is a self-motivated quick learner with the ability to grasp the “essence”, prioritize and be strategic, and can change course quickly where indicated
- Enjoy learning and are open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement
- Ability to build strong relationships with peers and cross-functionally with partners outside of the immediate workgroup
- Effective interpersonal communications skills are a critical competency since this role requires the ability to interface with a variety of scientific subject matter experts as well as non-experts from various geographies
- Ability to build strong network with academia and research institutions

- The preferred location for this position is Dow Global Headquarter (Midland, Michigan), but other home office locations in the US will be considered for the right candidate
