Job Summary:
Under general supervision, assists with the production of plants from the greenhouse. Responsibilities include preparing plant and flower seedlings for transplant, preparing the soil for the planting of seedlings, growing seedlings to maturation, mixing and applying pesticides, and performing general interior plant maintenance.
Description:
- Prepares soils for planting seeds and plugs and performs tasks to ensure their growth from seedlings to maturation.
- Prepares mature plants and flora for transplant.
- Examine plants' quality, checking for weeds, disease, and infestation.
- Sprays trees, plants, and shrubs with herbicides as directed.
- Distributes water to planting areas that are not irrigated; sets controls on irrigation boxes; operates misting systems to include automated times, switches, and controls.
- Mixes and applies fertilizer solution as directed; operates fertilizer injections system as directed.
- Pulls soil samples for testing and applies granular and slow-release fertilizers as directed.
- Mixes and applies pesticides as directed by a licensed grower.
- Performs routine service tasks on sprayers and associated equipment to ensure spray solution is correctly applied.
- Cleans greenhouse using rakes, brooms, shovels, disinfectants, and algaecides.
- Assists in applying and removing greenhouse shading and replacing the glass.
- Cuts grass around the greenhouse as needed.
- Assists in emptying trash containers and delivering and picking them up.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Greenhouse growing experience required (or related); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
- Must possess a valid standard driver’s license.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions
- Ability to work well with others
- Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are required.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
- More than 50% of the typical workday will be spent standing and reaching, so you must be able to lift your hands and arms above your head.
- Between 25 and 50% of the day is spent walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and using the repetitive wrist, hand, and finger motions.
- Less than 25% of the day is spent crawling.
- Must have visual clarity to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned and make general observations of facilities and structures.
- Required to perform work both inside and outside. Exposure to extreme heat, high humidity, and occasionally adverse weather conditions as well occasional extreme cold.
- Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, and exposure to chemicals.
- It may be subjected to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, or poor ventilation.
- Noise levels are considered normal to loud.
