Temporary Zookeeper – Large Mammals

Currently, the Toledo Zoo is seeking a Temporary Large Mammals Zookeeper. This position is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to animal husbandry and the maintenance of exhibits for the large mammal department. Candidates should have a working knowledge of a variety of species with an emphasis on hoofstock but may include carnivores. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act with scheduled work hours not exceeding 40 hours per work week.
Essential Job Functions:Duties will include, but are not limited to monitoring and reporting on the following
- Maintaining high standards of animal care through preparation and distribution of appropriate diets, animal observation, record maintenance and cleaning of animal areas and some public areas
- Participating in guest engagement activities including talks and tours
- Actively supporting and implementing department policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care of the collection and the safety of staff and visitors
- Participating in collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research and education
- Willingness to be trained in all departmental areas, working with a large variety of animal species
- Maintaining a positive attitude, while communicating and collaborating with team members
Minimum Training and Experience:
- Experience with animal husbandry preferred, or an equivalent combination of education/experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
- FFA & 4-H experience a plus!
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Work schedules include weekdays, weekends, and can include holidays.
- Must have the physical ability to work on your feet up to 8 hours a day and be able to walk the zoo grounds for several hours at a time.
- Candidates must also have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in the summer heat and winter cold.
- Must be willing to receive the necessary inoculations needed to work in the department.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Zoo fleet insurance carrier.
