Job Description and Duties
Operate snow removal equipment including trucks with plows and or sanders, motor graders, loaders, and rotary snow blowers. Included would be operating and manning chain control and road closures, directing traffic and proper placement of warning/detour signs. Assists in all aspects of slide removal (both manual and mechanical).
Operate Category 1 & 2 equipment such as but not limited to: end-dump trucks from 2 to 10 cu. yards, with either automatic or manual transmission, equipped with snowplows and sanders. May also operate front-end loaders, motor graders, snow blowers, equipment trailers, rear & side flail mowers, slope mowers and other related vehicles. Assignments will include but not be limited to: paving, sign/fence/guardrail repair, culvert cleaning, removing litter, roadside rest areas and other duties that would normally be assigned to a Highway Maintenance Worker or Landscape Maintenance Worker.
Special Projects: Works on special projects such as assisting in blasting operations, using rock drills and jackhammers, fabricating tire chains, and setting up emergency traffic controls for accidents and hazardous spills and other duties/incidents as required.
Equipment Care: Person is responsible for servicing, making minor adjustments, and emergency repairs. Cleaning of equipment and completing all pertinent records of equipment.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Desirable Qualifications
- Must have knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, and tools used in highway maintenance and construction; provisions of the California Vehicle Code as it pertains to the loading and operation of motor vehicles; and rules and regulations pertaining to highway maintenance practices.
- Possession of a valid Class A California Commercial Driver's License with a minimum of tank endorsement. Highly desirable to also possess a hazardous material endorsement.
- Ability to work safely around high-density traffic.
