Job Description and Duties
Transportation Engineering Technician can be tasked in several engineering functions in the region. Based on annual workload and seasonal needs, the incumbent may be assigned by Caltrans to a variety of positions in an office or field environment. The incumbent TET is permanently assigned to the North Region Project Development (NRPD) and will be under the direct supervision of a NRPD, Senior Transportation Engineer, and may receive direction from a Project Engineer (Lead Worker). When the incumbent TET is temporarily assigned in North Region (NR) Construction, the incumbent will be under the direct supervision of a NR Construction, Senior Transportation Engineer, and may receive direction from a Resident Engineer (Lead Worker). In either environment, the incumbent will perform various transportation engineering tasks. Travel to project sites will be required. Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer Technician exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Position located in Yuba County. While working in the NRPD office, the incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. There will be periodic field trips to project sites, travel to meet with agencies, the public, and for training classes. During the construction season, the individual may be loaned to construction to work as a construction inspector or materials tester, or in surveys. Incumbent may be required to live away from their permanent residence during the workweek. When working outdoors, incumbent may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and/or extreme heat or cold. During field work, use of heavy duty clothes and boots is required. Periodic overtime work and out of town overnight travel may be required. Travel may require the use of State supplied vehicles that vary in size. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
