Senior Mechanical/Layout Designer
We’re currently working with an established engineering consultancy delivering mining and mineral processing projects across the globe, and we’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Designer to join their team.
This is a design-focused role working across full plant layouts — not just isolated packages. You’ll be involved from early layout development through to detailed design, supporting the delivery of materials handling and process plant projects across a range of commodities.
The role will see you producing design models and drawings based on engineering input, developing plant layouts from early-stage information, and ensuring designs are practical, buildable, and aligned with project requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
-
Produce 2D and 3D design models and drawings from engineering calculations and sketches
-
Develop full plant layouts from preliminary project data and design inputs
-
Ensure all drawings comply with relevant Australian and international standards
-
Review vendor drawings and integrate supplier data into overall plant design
-
Contribute to design development across materials handling and process plant systems
-
Work to project schedules and man-hour budgets for assigned scope
-
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, projects, and other business units
This role requires someone who understands how plants actually come together — not just how to model them. You’ll need to think beyond the drawing and consider constructibility, access, and how the design will be built and maintained on site.
To be successful, you will have:
-
6+ years’ experience in mechanical design/drafting within mining or heavy industry
-
Strong experience in full plant layout, particularly across materials handling and process plants
-
Solid understanding of fabrication and construction methods in a mining environment
-
Proficiency in MicroStation (2D and 3D)
-
Relevant qualification in Engineering Design Drafting or similar
This is a good opportunity for a designer who wants to work across complete plant systems rather than being confined to a single package or discipline. You’ll be part of a team delivering complex plant designs, with exposure to a range of projects and the ability to contribute to how facilities are laid out and executed.
