Introduction

The Assurance and Environmental Practitioner will be responsible for implementing and maintaining environmental management systems, ensuring operational compliance with statutory requirements, and supporting the organisation’s environmental performance objectives. The role provides technical guidance, conducts environmental monitoring, and ensures accurate reporting to internal and external stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Regulatory Compliance & Governance

Maintain and update the environmental sections of the Mine Works Programme.
Manage environmental permits and licences (e.g., Waste Management Licence).
Support internal and external audits (DWS, LEDET, ISO) and ensure corrective actions are addressed.

2. Environmental Monitoring & Inspections

Conduct routine environmental inspections across operational areas.
Track and close out non-conformances and improvement actions.
Ensure adherence to site standards, legal requirements, and environmental commitments.

3. Performance Tracking & Reporting

Monitor and report progress against environmental sustainability goals, including:
Zero Waste to Landfill
Carbon Neutrality
Water usage reduction
Analyse environmental data and support decision‑making with insights and trends.

4. Systems & Data Management

Lead the rollout and management of IsoMetrix environmental modules.
Ensure data integrity, dashboard utilisation, and accurate reporting.

5. Waste & Resource Management

Oversee site waste streams and ensure compliance with waste regulations.
Support contractors and operations in implementing waste minimisation practices.

6. Rehabilitation & Closure Planning

Develop and update progressive rehabilitation plans.
Support the compilation and maintenance of closure plans and financial provision calculations.
Oversee actual rehabilitation work to design specifications

Desired Experience & Qualification

1. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or National Diploma in one of the following:
- Environmental Management / Environmental Science.
- Natural Resource Management.
- Geology, Ecology, or related environmental discipline.
Valid ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification – advantageous.

2. Experience

Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in an environmental role within:
- Mining, heavy industry, or regulated industrial environments.
Proven experience in:
- Environmental compliance and permitting (WUL, WML, EA/EMPr).
- Regulatory inspections and audits (DWS, LEDET, ISO 14001).
- Environmental monitoring, inspections, and non‑conformance management.
- Waste management and contractor oversight.
Experience with rehabilitation and closure planning in mining environments .

3. Regulatory & Legal Knowledge

Sound working knowledge of:

NEMA and associated regulations.
Programme (MWP).
Financial Provision Regulations for mine closure.
International standards (ISO 14001) and internal governance systems.

4. Systems & Technical Competencies

Ability to:
- Capture, validate and analyse environmental data.
- Produce dashboards, reports, and compliance submissions.
Good understanding of:
- Environmental performance indicators.
- Sustainability metrics (carbon, water, waste).
