Under the direction of the Pavement Support Branch Chief, a Senior Transportation Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent will assist Senior Transportation Engineers (Specialists) and/or the Office Chief in performing pavement related design and analysis, develop recommendations regarding pavement engineering, construction, maintenance, and preservation statewide, perform pavement research, review pavement designs and strategies, and prepare and review reports on complex problems/issues relating to pavements. Incumbent will also develop or evaluate pavement related plans, specifications, costs, software or other tools. Incumbent may partner with industry, academia, local agencies, and national/international organizations on pavement engineering and pavement maintenance issues.
Working Conditions
The incumbent may be required to sit for long periods of time, at their desk, using a keyboard, and video display terminal. Manual dexterity, and sustained periods of mental activity are needed for report reviewing, report writing, problem solving, analysis and reasoning.
The incumbent may occasionally be required to move materials weighing up to 50 lbs, move large and/or cumbersome plans and diagrams from one office location to another.
The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24 month to 33 months rotation assignment for all permanent, full‑time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees that have completed their probationary period. The program provides opportunities for employees and Caltrans to benefit by participating in a standardized process that systematically engages newly hired engineers. Participants will develop well‑rounded project delivery knowledge, skills, and abilities by rotating through diverse project delivery functional units. The Rotation Program includes mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction units, as well as a mandatory elective assignment. Assignments may involve long‑term travel and can be located throughout the state.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy.

Special Requirements
- Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
- Possession of a valid driver license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles is required. The incumbent may also be required to travel via airplanes, cars, vans, and buses; stay overnight in motel/hotel accommodations; drive a motor vehicle.
