The Work You Will Do:
This Professional Geologist III position performs highly technical, professional work under the direction of the Environmental Administrator for the Hazardous Waste Program and Permitting Section within the Division of Waste Management located in Tallahassee, Florida. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, professional geologist license in the State of Florida, discipline-specific knowledge, leadership skills, adaptive management knowledge and skills and be highly effective in both the team and an autonomous environment.

The Professional Geologist III provides regulatory oversight for environmental rehabilitation work conducted at Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permitted facilities across Florida under state and federal regulations. This position interacts with EPA, Federal DOD Facilities, DEP District Offices, and other sections and divisions across DEP to support the progress of operation and environmental cleanup of sites. This position is also instrumental at leading special projects, developing guidance and internal training, and mentoring junior team members.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
- In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.
- The incumbent is responsible for coordinating and tracking technical review of geological information and regulatory aspects of hazardous waste activities under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and professional certification of geological aspects of all assessment reviews conducted by non-PG staff. In addition, incumbent is charged with project manager responsibilities for some of the more complex cleanup cases.
- Coordinates review of hazardous waste corrective action permit applications to determine compliance with State and Federal regulations, and ensures permits are issued in a timely and effective manner. The reviews include technical evaluation of groundwater monitoring plans, assessments reports, corrective action plans and risk-assessments, and recommending permit conditions necessary to ensure compliance. Certification of geologic reports as required.
- The incumbent is responsible for training program staff on assessment and geological considerations.
- Assists hazardous waste field staff with inspections of existing and proposed facilities prior to issuance of permits to determine facility compliance with regulations. Provides professional assistance to district staff and facility applicants and consultants on treatment, storage or disposal methodologies. Participates in the department’s OSHA Program.
- Attends meetings and conferences with applicants, consultants, governmental officials and other affected parties to determine compliance with all state and federal regulations and standards.
- Research and reviews regulatory changes, literature and other documents to determine best current practices and procedures, and to maintain expertise in new technologies for management of hazardous waste and cleanup of hazardous waste facilities.
- Performs related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of RCRA permitting and corrective action requirements.
- Knowledge of risk-based corrective action.
- Skill in the use of common Microsoft Office Software.
- Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid State of Florida Licensed Professional Geologist (Chapter 492 F.S.)
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, environmental science or one of the natural sciences; or Any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of four years.
Other Job Related Requirements for this position:
- Valid Driver License.
- Upon employment OSHA Safety training is required to be completed.
POSITION OF SPECIAL TRUST REQUIREMENT:This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP-422 (Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility).
