The Work You Will Do:
This is an intermediate-level Engineering Specialist IV position within the Division of Waste Management, Waste Cleanup Program under the direction of an Environmental Administrator. The Engineering Specialist will coordinate with the Section Administrator, Professional Engineer, and Professional Geologists who provide technical and engineering assistance to section staff regarding the assessment and cleanup of hazardous waste sites.

The Engineering Specialist IV will ensure that the human health and the environment are protected through effective and efficient cleanup methods that are in accordance with State and Federal laws and rules, as appropriate. Your Specific Responsibilities:
- Provides engineering support and assistance to the Section’s project managers. This assistance includes review of remedial investigation/feasibility studies, engineering design documents, and documents associated with construction (as-builts, change orders, construction completion reports, etc.). Required to review professionally certified and sealed documents. Prepares written response comments. Works with Section staff, Professional Engineer, and contractors in evaluating selected remedial actions and ensures compliance with State and Federal laws and rules, as appropriate.
- Ensures the completed remedial project is in conformance with approved plans, specifications and change orders and is satisfactorily performing the function for which it was designed and built. Performs on-site final inspection of construction activities for cleanup projects, as necessary.
- Reviews remediation system operational data to ensure optimal system run-times and to reduce cost expenditures. Recommends system modifications to reduce unnecessary costs and improve system efficiency. Assists section staff with implementation of remediation projects and project changes.
- Assists the Section Administrator and Professional Engineer in developing and implementing Section procedure and policy for the engineering design, construction, and long-term operations and maintenance of site cleanups.
- Maintains communication with government, academic, and professional associations regarding new developments in remedial technology, emerging contaminants, industry practices and policy changes concerning environmental remediation.
- On a limited basis, the Engineering Specialist IV serves as project officer on cleanup projects.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of engineering practices and principles
- Knowledge of technical oversight of remediation activities.
- Knowledge of state and federal hazardous waste management and cleanup regulations.
- Ability to work well with others inside and outside the Department.
- Ability to write effectively, in a well-organized and understandable manner.
- Ability to communicate orally in a clear and effective manner.
- Ability to evaluate comprehensive technical documents.
Required or Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering and two years of verifiable related experience; or Any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total for six years.
Other Job-Related Requirements for this position:
- Valid Driver License.
- OSHA Safety Training successfully completed within six months of employment, then maintained thereafter
