Position: Security Officer I
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the Director of Security in all aspects of safety and security at the Mississippi Aquarium. The position will uphold all safety standards; ensure every element of the business is done in a manner that will keep team members and guests safe and secure. Protect the company and its assets by being fully knowledgeable of industry standards and code compliance including but not limited to: OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, AZA. The position will act as a liaison and build a partnership with The Department of Homeland Security, Mississippi Department of health and safety, Gulfport Police, Gulfport Fire & Rescue as well as neighboring businesses.
Responsibilities
- Effectively documents and monitors all safety and security issues related to security programs, policies, and procedures.
- Ensures the organization complies with all current safety regulations including but not limited to: OSHA Standards, dive safety operations, company standards compliance, AZA Safety audit and Homeland Security.
- Assists in identifying detrimental working conditions and making adjustments to safeguard team members and guest health.
- Assists in researching and recommending safety equipment.
- May assist in investigations, legal preparation, company representation where it regards civil litigation involving guest injures, damage or loss of guest property and workers compensation.
- Assists in maintaining all company required computer databases with information regarding incidents, accidents, illnesses, and injuries.
- Responsible for staying up to date on all corporate safety and security initiatives.
- Responsible for loss preventions up to and including theft, vandalism, natural disaster, flood and fire.
- Assists in the maintenance of safety and accident records in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Serves as a point of contact for safety and security system related issues.
- May assist in providing training to employees on use and features of the safety and security systems.
- Working with HR for reasonable accommodations to comply with ADA.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position may involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous an unpredictable animal species, and potentially dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
- Experience in risk management preferred.
- Safety and Security Certifications a plus.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, SDS and Worker’s Compensation and ADA.
- Legal knowledge a plus.
- Must be able to drive a vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Proficient in Excel, MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments while prioritizing completion dates
- Be outwardly and obviously friendly and genuinely caring about all our guests and employees.
- Be cooperative team player and able to work varying work schedules and assignments.
- Maintain a positive Company attitude toward Company policies, practice, procedures, the Company Mission statement, and fellow team members.
- Safety Certifications helpful (ASP, CSP).
- Flexible work Hours – Must be willing to work days, evenings, or nights depending on the needs of MSAQ.

- Safety & Security - All Team Members are required to adhere to all Mississippi Aquarium safety and security standards.
- Attendance & Appearance - To maximize the guest’s experience, all Team Members are required to adhere to Mississippi Aquarium standard operating procedures regarding attendance and dress code policies as it relates to individual job functionality. Tattoos and piercings must be appropriate and in keeping with a professional image. Depending on the work area, management reserves the right to determine that tattoos will need to be covered during your shift.
