The Solar Design Engineer uses an initial solar PV system concept and site data to produce detailed, code-compliant, and construction-ready design packages and Bill of Materials for residential and commercial project permitting and installation. Larger commercial project design may be limited to the preparation of a Front-end Engineering and Design (FEED) package for further external detailed design.
As a Solar Designer Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the permitting and detailed design for residential and commercial project pipeline
- Collaborating with the Project Manager to complete project intake documentation at handoff
- Verifying the initial system layout and equipment location as specified by the salesperson
- Soliciting additional design data as required
- Completing system designs for PV projects, which include site layout plans, mechanical racking and attachment plans, single-line electrical, communication and control system diagrams, BOS and equipment specifications, interconnection details, and compliance labeling
- Providing streamlined project information and a detailed BOM to procurement and project management
- Offering project engineering support to operations, service, and sales departments as needed
- Understanding the optimal design applications and limitations of standard products and participating in the evaluation of alternate products
- Providing a design package for approval and sealing by the Engineer-Of-Record
- Supplying the approved and sealed design package to the Project Coordinator for permit submission
- Proficiency in operating computers and familiarity with Microsoft Office suite and CAD platforms are essential skills
- A keen eye for detail and precision is a must-have quality for this role
- Comfort with occasional rooftop work is required
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in construction, design, or service is necessary
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are crucial for effective collaboration
- The ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks is key
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, is vital
- Knowledge of photovoltaic systems, NEC requirements, and construction practices is required
- The capability to perform effectively in high-pressure environments and manage tasks efficiently is essential
- Willingness to learn, adapt to new technologies, and apply them in the role is expected
- Possession of a valid driver's license is mandatory
