Purpose
CEEW seeks to hire a suitable candidate for the position of Research Intern within the Sustainable Livelihoods team. The selected candidate will contribute to two major verticals under the Sustainable Livelihoods theme: Mainstreaming a Green Economy across states in India and Powering Livelihoods through penetration of decentralised renewable energy (DRE) based livelihood technologies. As part of the Sustainable Livelihoods team at The Council, the individual would be involved in the cross-cutting themes of energy access, affordable finance for DRE livelihood technologies, sustainable jobs and rural livelihoods.
India has committed to a net-zero target by 2070, with imminent ambitious decarbonisation targets by 2030. Unless we align climate action with the country's economic growth and job priorities, we risk climate action getting side-lined in the wake of economic or employment distress. There is both a need and potential for climate action to generate a large number of jobs and fuel economic growth, conversations around which have thus far been very limited. So far, the green economy discussions with regard to climate action have adopted a narrow view. Green economy is generally associated with renewable energy, electric mobility, and, lately, green hydrogen. While these are important, such a limiting view of green jobs ignores the job and economic potential that other aspects of the climate action and overall pursuit of a green economy may hold. In this study, we encompass the following four themes under the broader umbrella of green economy:
Energy transition: large and small scale renewables, productive use of decentralised renewables, e-mobility, green hydrogen.
Bioeconomy: Land and forest based livelihoods (including but also beyond sustainable food production) including sustainable materials (bioplastics, biofertilisers, biofibers, etc.), biofuels from agro residue, etc.
Circular economy: recycling and upcycling opportunities for non-biodegradable materials.
Nature-based Solutions: carbon-based/ecosystem services based revenue streams for cultivators, community dwellers and others. Lack of access to reliable energy is a barrier for households, communities, and enterprises to reach their desired potential.
Powering Livelihoods, a USD 3 million joint initiative by CEEW and Villgro, aims to transform the rural economy with the penetration of clean energy-powered livelihood solutions. It supports enterprises deploying clean-energy-based livelihood solutions for undertaking large-scale commercial deployments and leverages this enterprise growth for ecosystem acceleration through – evidence generation and dissemination, unlocking sectoral partnerships (with financiers, investors, policymakers, etc.) and providing market advisory and policy support.
With the vision that within the next ten years, decentralised renewable energy (DRE) will be an integral part of all rural productive use applications, one of the major focus areas of the programme is to ignite this transformation by unlocking access to affordable finance for the end-users of these technologies. Such an endeavour is expected to scale the adoption of DRE livelihood technologies in a sustainable manner.
In addition to the duties and responsibilities below, the individual should be prepared to take on additional responsibilities as and when necessary.
Job Duties and Accountabilities
Research and Analysis:
Support in developing methodologies/framework for green jobs estimations.
Conduct literature reviews and collate data from primary and secondary sources.
Analyse large datasets using various methods and statistical tools (e.g., STATA).
Assist in conducting stakeholder consultations for data gathering and verification.
Writing and Documentation:
Assist in writing and proof - reading research reports/papers, briefs, write ups and issue notes, which could be circulated among industry associations, state and central government officials and other stakeholders.
Contribute to developing questionnaires for various stakeholders.
Support the team in developing concept notes for capacity-building engagement with financiers and other sector stakeholders; contribute to writing high-quality research reports; and regularly support in generating other knowledge products such as presentations, memos, blogs, and policy briefs for different audiences.

Selection Criteria
Educational Qualification
Strong academic credentials, preferably a Master's degree with a specialisation in development economics or development studies, livelihoods, agriculture, economics or related fields
OR
Bachelor’s degree in economics, statistics, environment, energy or related fields, preferably with relevant experience.
Key skills
Strong analytical skills (including logical reasoning, critical thinking, information gathering, analysing and visualising).
Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with relevant stakeholders.
Innovative ideation skills for strategic communication and dissemination of research pieces.
Proficiency in using Google Docs Editors Suite tools such as Google Docs, Sheets and Slides and a strong hold on statistical tools such as STATA, etc.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Exposure to research skills would be a plus
