Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Public Safety & Environment, the Sustainability Manager will develop and operationalize corporate sustainability strategy, commitments, initiatives, and reporting. The Calgary Stampede takes great pride in the lands we have been charged with the care of for over a century and intend to care for these lands for centuries to come. It is with this in mind that the organization has made a conscious investment in the organization’s environmental journey. The Sustainability Manager will play a lead role in formalizing, articulating and implementing the next chapter in the Stampede’s approach to environmental sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Develop the strategic direction and Sustainability priorities for the organization and develop pathways to achieving key targets. Lead the GHG accounting process from data collection to communication.
- Guide development of new and enhanced value-added sustainability and GHG offerings to the event industry and facility management marketplace.
- Oversee any sustainability consultant agreements and deliverables
- Lead an employee based Environmental Action Team; produce recommendations on action, policy, or behavior change; work with internal stakeholders to enact these recommendations and develop a cohesive narrative around them.
- Build the capacity of team members from across the organization.
- Liaise and support internal groups on environmental initiatives that impact their respective business units.
- Influence key decision makers within the organization and across the industry to include environmental impact as a required criteria in evaluating business decisions. (Carbon footprint, processes, purchases, supply chain, etc.)
- Provide leadership to the sustainability team, which includes direct and indirect reporting relationships.
Daily Operations & Reporting
- Analysis of current activities including emissions calculations, risk assessments, and environmental impact to establish baseline metrics.
- Develop organizational policies and procedures as they relate to environmental impact to meet and exceed regulatory compliance and certification requirements.
- Identify opportunities for improvement that address short-, mid- and long-term organizational sustainability goals
- Day-to-day performance reporting on environmental and sustainability initiatives/programs
- Continuing development of Sustainability metrics and data visualization
- Identification, achievement and ongoing compliance of relevant environmental certifications that support the advancement of the organization’s environmental goals.
- Formulating and recommending relevant reporting guidelines
- Interpret and translate implications of global environmental standards and targets into strategic information processes and actionable event industry and facility management metrics
- Developing and publishing a publicly accessible sustainability report.
Qualifications
- Completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in environmental studies, environmental management or environmental science, or another relevant discipline.
- Master’s degree in business/sustainability, or additional relevant certifications are an asset.
- 5 years’ experience in implementing and managing corporate sustainability programs, energy conservation, environmental compliance, and securing external project funding.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in energy and sustainability reporting and analysis including benchmarking and target setting.
- Previous experience in energy management, with familiarity in mechanical (HVAC) systems, BAS control, metering and performance benchmarking, an asset
- Experience using one or more of the international guidelines (such as GRI, UN Global Compact, GHG Protocol, SASB) is required.
Practical and Technical Knowledge
- Ability to identify, research, analyze and understand relevant and valuable industry trends
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of greenhouse gas reporting systems and issues including calculation validity, applicable protocols, inventory and boundary considerations
- Superior understanding of Canadian environmental law and regulations.
- Budgeting skills, with experience in establishing and maintaining financial controls as it relates to annual operating budgets.
- Understanding of ISO14001 and ISO20121 standards
- Experience with MS Office

- Ability to apply analytical techniques to identify the root cause of a problem and find the best solution.
