OVERVIEW
Vertex is currently accepting applications for full-time, permanent Intermediate Environmental Scientist(s) with three to four years of experience in Assessment and Remediation in the Commercial and Urban development sectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and executing commercial and industrial Assessment and Remediation (A&R) projects in accordance with Vertex guidelines and project scopes. This role will focus on A&R projects in the Commercial and Urban development sectors and include the following key work activities; development of work plans and cost estimates for various Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), completing site visits and inspections to support Phase 1 programs, conducting assessment programs (Phase 2 ESAs) using a wide range of drilling techniques, installation and sampling of groundwater networks, remediation projects of varying size and complexity, and completion of technical reporting to meet Vertex and regulatory requirements. This individual will play a critical role in the execution of all aspects of programs and projects in the Urban Development and Infrastructure team while delivering a cost-effective approach that exceeds our client’s expectations.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma or higher education related to environmental sciences, biology or other related discipline
- Currently poses a professional designation (or in training designation) applicable for conducting professional sign off in Alberta and/or Saskatchewan. Signoff in British Columbia is considered an asset.
- Minimum 3 years of environmental work experience with demonstrated competency in three or more of the following:
- Phase I ESA program execution – cost estimating, site visits and records review interpretation and reporting
- Phase II ESA program execution – cost estimating, oversight of pre-investigation activities (ground disturbance, coordination of contractors, filed preparation) and drilling supervision and sample collection, reports review and data gap analysis, development and execution of soil and groundwater contamination plume delineation program
- Groundwater well development/installation and sampling
- Remediation programs – guiding excavations, insitu experience, and/or cost estimating
- Development of technical reports and/or cost estimates for technical projects
- Willingness to work in the field for extended periods of time; willingness to travel within Western Canada as required
- Excellent communication and technical reporting skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Working knowledge of contaminated sites management regulations in Alberta and Saskatchewan
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Spend up to 70% of work hours performing technical field activities on environmental projects, which may include:
- Environmental Site Assessments (Phase I and II)
- Remediation – Development of Conceptual Site Model (CSM), Preparation of Remedial Action Plan (RAP), supervision and management of remedial excavations, and/or other in-situ remediation technologies
- Groundwater monitoring
- Responsible for project coordination, cost control and project scoping to ensure effectively versatile solutions are developed to meet client’s regulatory needs and budgets
- Responsible for both field and office execution of environmental projects with an emphasis on field work
- Active stewardship of Vertex and client safety programs is expected
- Responsible to build relationships within Vertex, with regulators and clients to effectively develop and manage projects within the environmental business unit
- Mentor and coach junior environmental staff
LOCATION
This position will be based out of our Sherwood Park or Calgary, Blackfoot office.
