HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Philanthropy Writer researches, develops, writes and edits compelling and persuasive fundraising content in digital and print format on behalf of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) Philanthropy and Marketing departments. This position reports to the Philanthropy Senior Editor.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Creates unique, compelling, and engaging copy.
- Develops copy and content in a manner that drives donor response.
- Meets SDZWA’s fundraising goals across a variety of communication channels.
- Edits content and proofreads a variety of communication types.
- Understands emerging trends and best practices in philanthropy and nonprofit organization.
- Develops copy for a variety of needs.
- Writes content to a wide-range of audience types.
- Conducts research and interviews as necessary.
- Ensures timely and successful fundraising results.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Philanthropy Writer is deeply experienced and skilled in writing for a variety of fundraising and donor stewardship tactics, including print, digital, and live events. Using philanthropic and communications best practices, you’ll write persuasive narrative communications that solicit donor support for initiatives at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, share lifechanging stories of our local and global conservation efforts, and more. You’ll collaborate closely with philanthropy and marketing to support the needs of both departments while adhering to brand voice and making strategic recommendations as appropriate.
JOB EXPERIENCE
- 3 -5 years professional experience in nonprofit copywriting, philanthropy communications, editing, and content marketing
- Experience developing and crafting copy for nonprofit fundraising, advocacy, and target-driven donor response
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree In communication, journalism or related field and/or equivalent specialized trainingpreferred
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Editing, grammar, and writing rules
- Natural history, wildlife conservation, zoology, or biology is desirable
- Use computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Office)
- Multi-task and work quickly under pressure
- Remain adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines to meet business needs
- Collaborate and work effectively with others in a diverse team environment
- Maintain confidentiality on all projects
- Communicate effectively (verbal and written)
