HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Interpretive Writer researches, develops, writes, fact checks, and edits audience-targeted content for the interpretive volunteer training program, curriculum packets, blogs, SDZWA Journal, scripts, Wildlife Explorers, and on-grounds interpretive habitats and operational signs for the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. This position reports to the Director of Purpose Communications.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Creates interpretive content for a wide variety of outlets including panels, IDs, SDZWA Journal, blogs, scripts, websites, Wildlife Explorers channel and website, advertisements, commercials, and podcasts.
- Researches, writes, fact checks, and edits interpretive content regarding the work of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance in wildlife natural history and behavior, wildlife care, nutrition, conservation, and research that engages our audiences.
- Develops and writes content for online e-learning modules and classroom activities, including curriculum that meets California Educational Standards.
- Coordinates with the Operations, Education, Busses, Safaris, Retail, Philanthropy, and Wildlife Care departments in creating content. Recommends content strategies to target specific key audiences.
- Writes scripts for video and radio for the website, presentations, awards, and advertisements.
- Ensures stylistic and content consistency across platforms and media.
- Interviews and works with subject matter experts to create and refine the content for all interpretive purposes.
- Assists with interpretive sign status and inventory.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- JOB EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of five years of interpretive writing experience
- Experience in writing for the public and educational curriculum development
- Experience writing interpretive graphics and scripts
- Zoo, aquarium, museum, or nonprofit experience
- Experience in classroom education and/or personnel training
- Experience with assessment and evaluation of personnel and programs is helpful
- Instructional design
- Educational technology
- EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in English, Education, Biology, Science Education, Museum Education, Interpretation, Instructional Design, Creative Writing, or a related field required
- Master's Degree in English, Education, Biology, Science Education, Museum Education, Interpretation, Instructional Design, Creative Writing, or a related field preferred
- Current valid California Driver’s License in good standing
- Teaching Credential preferred
- SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Able to craft content from draft to public presentation
- Ability to think creatively and strategically and use new technologies to expand outreach and program impact
- Fluency in Content Management Systems
- Must have knowledge of and experience in writing pieces for magazines, blogs, podcasts, scripts, and other interpretive platforms
- Ability to present the brand correctly in copy and images
- Able to conduct effective interviews for the purpose of creating written content
- Able to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines using outstanding time management skills
- Knowledge of research best practices in writing and editing
- Able to generate and develop interactive interpretive ideas
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others and in a team environment
- Able to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
- Able to operate moderately complex computer software programs, including but not limited to, PowerPoint and desktop publishing systems
- Zoology, ecology, conservation, science, educational technology, and animal-related fields is desirable
- Knowledge of social media channels and writing trends
- Ability to correctly portray the brand in copy and photos
- Ability to use a project management and editing software including Freshdesk, Airtable, and TruEdit
