Role SummaryWe are seeking an experienced product designer to join the Interaction Experience Design (IXD) team at Rivian. You will help design digital, physical, and auditory experiences that center on Rivian’s genre-redefining adventure vehicles, but extend seamlessly into the Rivian mobile app, Rivian charging stations, and our smart accessory products. Responsibilities- UX/UI design for topics including: Charging experience, Camping and other special modes, climate control, drive modes & suspension, lighting, sound design, security and camera features, vehicle access, hard controls, smart accessories, and much more. You will spend time in these amazing vehicles, using the app, using the accessories and chargers. We are hands-on, we are makers.
- Help create detailed interaction design expectations for some of the most anticipated new vehicles in the automotive industry (Rivian R2 and R3) and upcoming accessory products, including hardware and haptic targets for controls and buttons, behaviors for lighting and audio feedback. We define these things by prototyping and experiencing them as hands-on as possible.
- Work closely with product and technical partners to explore and define user problems/needs, including generating storyboards and UX flows to fully visualize scenarios and user behavior. This team specializes and excels at visual storytelling and creating a vision to move a complex project towards a goal.
- Work closely with the Industrial Design team in the development of physical products. This role is not only automotive design, but you will stretch into the consumer electronics space as well.
- Collaborate with other design teams within Rivian’s Interaction Experience Design (IXD) Department to ensure a cohesive experience across vehicle, mobile, and other touchpoints.
- Work closely with our UX Research team to understand user needs through user studies and testing, including providing prototypes or other materials for evaluation.
- Generate any or all design deliverables the project or scenario call for: including early rough sketches or prototypes (digital or physical), concept videos, interactive prototypes, logic diagrams, UX flows, production-quality digital assets for dev handoff, complete product UX specifications, and executive-level design overviews.
- Confidently present design work to executive stakeholders and design leadership, either in person or on Zoom.
- Document final designs in detailed handoff files, including focused explanations for expected functionality (visual, mechanical, auditory, or all 3).
- Apply our design system to drive consistency across our digital ecosystem. Work with our Design Systems team to stretch and redefine our patterns when needed.
- Work closely with development and engineering partners throughout the process to test in-flight work in vehicle, mobile app, or pre-release accessories prior to release
Qualifications- 5+ years as a professional User Experience/Product Designer delivering complex products.
- Experience with interactive electronic consumer products is a plus.
- Some experience in (or with) Industrial Design is a plus.
- A compelling visual portfolio of work to demonstrate design experience.
- Demonstrated ability in crafting strategic design briefs to set the framing and scope of each project.
- Experience working closely with cross functional teams in an agile fashion.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortability with context switching and being a “Jack-of-all-trades”.
- Experience in automotive design not required, but is of interest.
- High proficiency with creative tools; Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch
- Proficiency with digital prototyping tools such as Protopie are a plus.
- Proficiency with video/animation tools such as AfterEffects are a plus.
- Experience with sound design is a plus
- No driving related suspensions or revocation of Driver License (within a 3-5 year period)
- No drug or alcohol related driving incidents in the last 3 years
- No more than 1 serious moving violation in the last 3 years
Must have a valid driver's license in the state of residence that you will be
driving/operating a vehicle
Will be subject to continuous Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) monitoring
Pay DisclosureSalary Range Palo Alto-Based Applicants: $132,000 -$165,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, and other factors permitted by law).
