Lead Electrical Engineer – Power Generation and Energy Storage
The Opportunity
A Houston-based engineering, procurement, and construction firm is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to direct electrical engineering activities for utility-scale power projects. The project portfolio includes combined-cycle facilities, simple-cycle generation, battery energy storage, and hybrid energy installations.
This position owns the electrical scope from early project definition through energization and performance verification. The successful candidate will combine strong power-system knowledge with the practical judgment required to turn technical concepts into safe, buildable, and reliable facilities.
What You Will Do
- Direct electrical engineering work for assigned power-generation and energy-storage projects.
- Establish system architecture for generators, excitation systems, synchronization equipment, auxiliary power, transformers, switchgear, substations, and plant distribution.
- Guide the integration of battery racks, power conversion equipment, energy management platforms, protection systems, and plant controls.
- Develop design criteria, one-line diagrams, equipment specifications, calculations, and technical work packages.
- Coordinate utility and ISO/RTO interconnection requirements, including the electrical interface between the generating facility and the transmission system.
- Lead or review load-flow, short-circuit, equipment-duty, protection-coordination, grounding, arc-flash, and related system studies.
- Evaluate supplier proposals and provide technical recommendations for major electrical equipment.
- Review equipment drawings, relay logic, protection settings, control narratives, and supplier documentation.
- Represent the electrical discipline during project planning, design reviews, constructability sessions, and client meetings.
- Work with mechanical, civil, structural, controls, procurement, construction, and commissioning personnel to resolve multidiscipline issues.
- Answer field questions, evaluate deviations, and develop practical solutions during construction.
- Support energization, functional testing, start-up, and acceptance testing.
- Maintain engineering quality while managing discipline schedules, budgets, deliverables, and technical risks.
- Coach less-experienced engineers and strengthen consistency across electrical work products.
Required Background
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in power generation, utility infrastructure, or large industrial energy projects.
- Hands-on engineering experience involving combined-cycle or simple-cycle generating facilities.
- Direct exposure to battery energy storage design, interconnection, integration, or deployment.
- Experience supporting a project through multiple phases, ideally from initial design through construction and commissioning.
- Strong command of medium- and high-voltage equipment, plant distribution, protective relaying, and grid interfaces.
- Working knowledge of applicable NEC, NESC, NFPA, IEEE, IEC, and utility requirements.
- Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to clients, suppliers, contractors, and project leadership.
Preferred Background
- Active Professional Engineer license.
- Experience with ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, or comparable power-system analysis software.
- Knowledge of gas-generation-plus-storage or renewable-plus-storage configurations.
- Familiarity with BESS dispatch, plant controls, and market participation requirements.
- Previous responsibility for an electrical discipline within an EPC or design-build environment.
