We're doing unconventional things, and to be successful we need a team of unconventional traders. This is a brand new venture within Octopus and we have a blank canvas to create a diverse and talented team of market experts that will really push to find new ways of improving market efficiency and decarbonising the grid.
You will be a key member of the team that develops transformational solutions and rapidly implements these to meet the urgent and global need for energy flexibility.
You’ll be responsible for creating value from the Intraday Power market, trading the volatility, and managing our exposure. You’ll also work on the high-level trading approach, supporting in the evolving design and improvement of our in-house analytical tools.

Celyn Simmonds - “Octopus Energy Trading is a new function within the Octopus Group that is tasked with managing all the Group's short term trading responsibilities. We'll be building a 24 hour shift desk, supported by world class developers, in order to optimise our flex assets (think batteries, EV's, heat pumps..), retail, and renewable energy portfolio, as well as taking speculative positions. What you'll do - Use market leading analytical tools to make fast, profitable trading decisions
- Execute trades within the Intraday Power market to manage Octopus’ exposure on its multi-billion pound hedge book
- Deliver additional value through the optimisation of flexible assets in the short term market
- Trade the changing forecasts of our PPA portfolio
- Design and feedback ideas for improvements in the analytics suite, as well as share trading strategy ideas with the rest of the team
- Help to build and design algorithmic trading strategies
- Liaise with the Trading Manager to ensure short term exposure risks are understood across the business
What you'll need- Experience in Commodity Trading or similar field - ideally 1+ years experience
- A passion for the challenge of decarbonisation and grid flexibility as the enabler for it
- Ability to synthesise numerical information and make informed decisions quickly
- Eagerness to learn the fundamental drivers of the power market and become a top performing trader within the market
- A drive to succeed in a fast paced and competitive market
- An ability to maintain continued attention to the market, even in times of low market volatility
- Comfortable working shifts, including frequent nights and weekends
