Role Summary:
We are looking for a Toronto-based Principal focused on Sustainability Value Creation to join the Portfolio Value Creation (PVC) team. PVC partners with CPP Investments’ extensive portfolio of private assets (>$200B) and works out of offices in Toronto, London, New York, and Sao Paolo. PVC consists of ~35 experienced professionals with investment, consulting/advisory, and corporate backgrounds and functional expertise in areas such as sustainability, cybersecurity, data analytics and AI, and human capital.
PVC is responsible for driving value creation across CPP Investments’ global portfolio of material direct equity investments across direct private equity, infrastructure, energy and real estate sectors. The team is active across the entire asset lifecycle with selective pre-deal and consistent post-deal involvement. In partnership with investment and portfolio company management teams, PVC seeks to identify and drive initiatives that improve long-term business performance such as growing revenue and improving costs.

PVC is contributing to this commitment by building capabilities to systematically identify and execute sustainability-led initiatives that enhance performance while strengthening asset resilience. PVC includes three dedicated sustainability colleagues who, along with trusted external advisors, are integrated into the investment lifecycle from diligence to exit.
Reporting to the Managing Director, Portfolio Value Creation, you will work directly with portfolio companies and investment teams to play a lead role in identifying and executing sustainability initiatives that both unlock commercial value and mitigate material sustainability risks. These initiatives will span the value chain - including operations, supply chain, product development, management and board strategy, and capital planning – and address opportunities related decarbonization, physical climate risk, health and safety and maintaining a social license to operate.

Partner with investment groups to identify and underwrite sustainability-related upside opportunities and material risks, including decarbonization, physical climate risk and insurance management, operational efficiency, regulatory exposure, and supply chain exposure throughout diligence and ownership, while translating complex sustainability and climate topics into clear, commercially actionable insights that support investment decision-making.
Work directly with portfolio company executives, boards, and PVC colleagues to embed sustainability considerations into business strategy, operations, and capital allocation, and lead end-to-end execution of sustainability initiatives that drive measurable outcomes, including revenue growth, cost reduction, operational resilience, and downside risk mitigation across the portfolio.
Apply learnings from diligence and portfolio management activities to develop scalable playbooks, tools, and frameworks that continue to scale and institutionalize sustainability-led value creation, risk management, and underwriting capabilities across the private portfolio, spanning a broad range of sectors and asset classes.
Qualifications:
8 - 10+ years of experience in sustainability value consulting, private equity, corporate sustainability, or other sustainability roles with a commercial orientation
Broad experience working across a wide range of industries, sectors, and geographies
Expertise across sustainability topics including, Environmental Health & Safety, responsible sourcing, value chain resilience with deeper expertise in decarbonization / energy transition, physical climate risk highly valued
Strong commercial judgment and financial acumen, able to apply a commercial analytical sustainability lens, to evaluate investment and operational trade-offs, and prioritize high-impact opportunities and risks across a range of sustainability themes
Proven track record of delivering tangible financial impact and/or risk mitigation outcomes through sustainability initiatives
Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional projects from strategy through execution in real operating environments
Experience working in complex stakeholder environments, including senior executives and investment professionals and ability to translate technical sustainability and climate concepts into clear, commercially relevant insights
