Job Description - Environmental Control Officer – 8 Months Fixed Term Contract – Cape Town - RK200426-4252
We are looking to appoint an Environmental Control Officer (ECO) on an 8-month fixed-term contract to support our team across a portfolio of environmental construction-related projects.
Contract Term
- Duration: 8 months fixed-term
- Remuneration: Market Related - Negotiable
Role Purpose
The ECO will be responsible for supporting and overseeing environmental compliance on construction-related projects, including site inspections, monitoring, reporting, contractor engagement, and ensuring adherence to environmental authorisations, EMPrs, method statements, and project-specific environmental requirements.
Minimum Requirements
- A relevant environmental qualification (degree, diploma, or similar) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Nature Conservation, or a related field
- Minimum 8 years of actual field experience in an ECO / site-based environmental compliance role
- Strong practical experience on construction sites
- Good understanding of:
- EMPr implementation
- Environmental authorisation conditions
- Site inspections, audits, and compliance monitoring
- Contractor liaison and practical site-based problem solving
- Valid driver’s licence
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites as required
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake regular site inspections and environmental monitoring on construction projects
- Monitor and report on compliance with:
- Environmental Authorisations
- EMPrs
- Method statements
- Permit and licence conditions
- Identify non-compliances, environmental risks, and corrective actions required
- Work directly with contractors, site teams, and project managers to resolve site issues practically and efficiently
- Prepare clear, professional ECO reports, site notes, photographic records, and follow-up actions
- Track close-out of corrective actions and support strong environmental compliance performance across projects
- Represent the company professionally on site and maintain good working relationships with clients and contractors
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Strong field-based practical experience, not just office-based environmental experience
- Comfortable working independently on active construction sites
- Organised, observant, and confident in dealing with contractors and site personnel
- Able to apply environmental requirements in a practical, solutions-oriented way
- Good report writing and communication skills
- Reliable, professional, and proactive
Preference
Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience working as an ECO on infrastructure, energy, civil, or other construction-related projects.
