Since 1987, the Conservation Corps of Long Beach (CCLB) has worked to help youth realize their potential while serving the Gateway Cities area. As a state-certified Corps, CCLB is positioned to offer its Corpsmembers access to a variety of environmental work experiences while also facilitating personal development opportunities. More than 12,000 youth and young adults have benefitted from our unique program, and over 1,500 have received a high school diploma while working with us. We continue to serve local youth as we work towards achieving our vision of a world where all youth and young adults thrive, are resilient, have equitable access to opportunity, and are stewards of our community and the environment.

Position Summary
The Director of Projects and Training adds value to the mission of the Conservation Corps of Long Beach (CCLB) by using their skills and expertise to advance CCLB’s goals of youth development and training. Reporting to the Deputy Director/COO, the Director of Projects and Training is responsible for managing multiple teams and both developing and implementing various types of projects and trainings that could include, but are not limited to, community greening / urban forestry, zero waste, restoration, land management, and operations. The position is also responsible for project cost estimating, oversight, interfacing with project sponsors, and all project technical administration including project updates, reporting, and other grant/project management requirements.

- Training and Development:
- Supervise, motivate, direct, mentor, and coordinate staff and crews of young people in a demanding work training/educational program.
- Supervise, oversee, and conduct training for CCLB crews in the completion of tasks/projects.
- Complete and oversee daily contract and grant tasks.
- Provides leadership and works with program staff and develop and maintain a high performance, customer service-oriented work environments that supports achieving CCLB mission, objectives and service expectations; provides leadership and participates in programs and activities that promote a positive employee relations environment.
- Serves as an expert program resource; provides training and technical assistance to program staff; interprets program policies and associated regulations; trains, advises and assists project supervisors with field program and evaluates their consistency and effectiveness in interpreting contract/grant documents and requirement for compliance by accompanying them in the field; visit job sites to personally inspect progress on each project; conducts daily safety training program.
- Assist as needed with on-the-job teaching of skills; and foster and encourage development of good work habits, work experience and teamwork.

- Serve as the primary point of contact for grant or project sponsor/funder.
- Lead planning and development / pursuit of new projects and trainings opportunities.
- Manage the teams by providing appropriate direction and ongoing feedback, delegating tasks, prioritizing work, and conducting performance reviews.
- Lead weekly grant/project meetings and provide updates on grant/project status, next steps, and recommendations.
- Manage and track grant/project budget and ensure grant/project outcomes are delivered within budget.
- Ensure compliance with all grant/project requirements, including but not limited to, documentation, reporting, and invoicing.
- Keep the team up-to-date on grant/project progress and ensure timely communication
- Execute project deliverables, including but not limited to vendor and partner management, overseeing CCLB work crew operations, and coordinating with all projects teams and departments to meet organization’s goals

- Represent CCLB externally in a variety of settings, including, but not limited to, conferences, public meetings, and other gatherings.

- Demonstrate highly effective supervisory skills (expected to be at least 5 – 7 years’ supervisory experience leading multi-level teams); this includes assisting in hiring, training and the ability to delegate work activities to accomplish diverse Corps objectives.
- Knowledge of recycling, natural lands management, and community greening industry and technical writing (for proposal bids and contracts).
- Knowledge and appreciation of environmental conservation. An affinity and ability to share and instruct environmental ethics with CCLB participants and staff.
- Proficiency in using tools and equipment appropriate for various work projects.
- Experiencing managing projects from funding, to design, to implementation, and close-out.
- Three years of experience in working with young adults from a diverse social and ethnic background
- High school diploma or equivalent, required; Postsecondary degree (BA/BS), preferred
- Prior management experience in public or non-profit agencies, preferred
