About the Position
The Sector Lead, Mining – Canada Environmental, is responsible for leading ALS’s market position related to the retention and growth of environmental mining services. In this role, the Sector Lead translates mining market intelligence into clear commercial and client-development priorities, ensuring ALS’s environmental services are positioned as a trusted and differentiated partner across the mining lifecycle. The position acts as a catalyst for collaboration across business lines, enabling a coordinated approach that supports sustainable growth and client retention.
A major measure of success through these engagements will include revenue growth through retention of existing customers and acquisition of new customers. The role is expected to lead conference attendance and participation in key markets, while building participation and credibility on regional and national committees and workshops. The position will work closely with national and regional technical and management teams to inform strategic and tactical direction for environmental mining services in Canada. Given ALS’s strong brand in Minerals (geochemistry, metallurgy, and mine-site testing), a key focus of the role includes collaboration between ALS Environment and Minerals divisions.
Specific Responsibilities
- Position ALS to participate in leading committees related to mining industry developments
- Obtain, assess, and report on intel related to mining market trends (price, methods, policies)
- Prepare a quarterly report on mining market activities, revenue, major bids
- Responsible to lead and prepare formal bids and unsolicited proposals to mining industry
- Lead ALS presence at conferences and present materials related to ALS services and solutions
- Liaise with internal and external teams on matters of mining technical urgency or complexity
- Act as internal point of contact related to all major mining opportunities
- Build strong relationships with key mining specialists within the priority customers
- Support the development of business processes to improve success and scalability in testing
- Provide technical input and guidance to the management/laboratory teams based on market trends
- Participate in (and eventually lead) the development of a strategy/tactics plan for mining sector
- Participate in a Canada-wide collaboration between multiple services lines and divisions providing testing to the mining sector
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong business development skills and adept at building relationships
- Highly motivated, an independent thinker and able to work as part of a team
- Strong presentation skills in medium to large group settings (conferences)
- Strong skills in grasping technical concepts
- Familiarity with (and ability to present on) the Canadian regulatory environment in the mining industry
- A strong orientation towards service quality, technical innovation and continuous improvement
- Able to effectively manage change in a dynamic environment and balance multiple priorities
- Experience coordinating conference attendance and market campaigns
- Ability to evaluate and recommend improvement to business processes
- Ability to effectively handle escalations and time critical issues
- Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity, and ability to problem solve
- Excellent computer skills including use of MS Office Suite
- Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 15 years of experience in the mining and environmental sectors
- Minimum 10 years of experience in solutions-driven business development and/or customer service roles
- Science degree with experience with modern analytical techniques and instruments related to lab testing
Physical Demands
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks such as data entry
- Ability to use and view a computer screen for up to 8 hours per day
- Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities
Our benefits includes
An estimated annual salary of $90,000 to $120,000 at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
