About the Role:
The Commissioning Engineer is part of a cross-functional team that focuses on executing battery storage
projects with market-leading technologies. The Commissioning Engineer is responsible for testing and
commissioning oversight activities of Battery Energy System Storage (BESS) projects from the PreCommissioning phase through to Substantial Completion to ensure successful execution and operation of the BESS project. The Commissioning Engineer is expected to spend over 75% of their time at the project site.
Responsibilities:
• Align commissioning scope, goals, and schedule with owners, O&M, design, and construction.
• Build commissioning plans, checklists, and functional test documentation to standards
• Review drawings/documents to flag scope gaps and clarify responsibilities early
• Execute on-site commissioning and keep scope, schedule, and stakeholders aligned
• Coordinate communication across internal teams and external parties (utilities, AHJs, contractors)
• Lead daily Plan of the Day (POD) meetings with equipment suppliers
• Review FAT procedures and reports to confirm equipment readiness
• Run site walkdowns to align plans, schedules, and commissioning checklists
• Troubleshoot installation/commissioning issues and drive resolution to closure
• Capture lessons learned, improve processes, and support O&M training/hand-off
Required Qualifications and Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and practical experience
• 5 years of experience in commissioning and/or systems engineering within an energy storage integrator and/or EPC environment
• Direct experience with BESS commissioning/testing or related electrical systems (e.g., MV stations/substations, inverters, transformers, switchgear)
• Strong capability in equipment specifications, technical bid evaluations, and procurement support for major electrical equipment
• Working knowledge of construction/project execution controls (RFIs, submittals, NCRs, change orders, as-builts) and field coordination
• Technical proficiency in MV electrical design/analysis concepts (ampacity, short circuit/load flow, protection coordination, arc flash, grounding/IEEE 80)
• Solid understanding of applicable codes/standards and compliance (NEC, UL), with strong communication, prioritization, and stakeholder management skills
