The Opportunity
Aviva Global Corporate and Specialty has an exciting opportunity within our Construction, Renewable Energy, and Mining (CREM) team, part of the Corporate Risk Group. Based in Toronto, Ontario, this Underwriter role supports our strategic expansion in the large‑risk construction and energy markets. As a newly created position on an industry‑focused team, it offers strong potential for growth, development, and the ability to make a meaningful impact as we scale.
In this role, your primary focus will be managing new and renewal business while actively prospecting new opportunities. You will underwrite across construction builders’ risk, construction operational property, and renewable energy property lines. Your work will center on Large Commercial and Multinational accounts with annual revenues exceeding $200M, giving you exposure to complex, high‑value risks.
What you’ll do
As an Underwriter on the CREM team, your primary focus and responsibility will be to work on new and renewal business, as well as prospecting new opportunities with a strong focus on construction builders’ risk, construction operational property, and renewable energy property business. Target customer focus is on are Large Commercial and Multinational Accounts with annual sales greater than $200M in revenue.

This role will be based in Toronto, Ontario. We are recruiting for an Underwriter to grow with us while we expand our business footprint in the large risk construction and energy space. This is a new role on an industry focused team which increases the opportunity for success and development for interested candidates.
What you’ll bring
5+ years of experience in the insurance industry as a Large Risk Commercial Property Underwriter, with a strong track record of underwriting complex accounts.
Post-secondary education in Business or a related discipline — or equivalent practical experience that demonstrates strong commercial acumen.
Solid technical expertise in Property Builder’s Risk and/or energy risks (highly valued assets).
Additional experience in Contractors Equipment or Mining underwriting is a strong plus.
Deep understanding of complex risk profiles, supported by confident technical judgment across relevant lines of business.
Exceptional communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and build consensus.
A proactive problem‑solver who makes sound decisions and navigates challenges with confidence.
Demonstrated leadership qualities, coupled with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a high‑performing team.
Strong marketing instincts and proven relationship‑building capabilities with brokers, clients, and internal partners.
A strong customer‑focused mindset, always looking for ways to elevate and enhance the broker and client experience.
A professional, solutions‑oriented approach, supported by excellent pipeline management and sales consultation skills.
A well‑rounded understanding of the business line, with the ability to identify barriers and proactively engage leadership when needed.
Growing expertise in applying specialized technical knowledge to underwrite large, complex commercial accounts with confidence.
What you’ll get
The salary band for this position ranges from $90,000 to $110,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
