Jekyll Island is dedicated to maintaining the delicate balance between nature and humankind through conservation, education, and preservation. Surrounded by salt marshes, expansive oceanfront, and ancient maritime forests, it is situated within the chain of the Golden Isles, and just a few miles from St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Brunswick. As a State Park, Jekyll Island is a coastal haven where nature and humans peacefully co-exist.
Job Summary:
For more than 60 years, the Jekyll Island Museum has served as the steward of Jekyll Island’s past, preserving its stories, structures, and artifacts. The Jekyll Island Museum currently seeks motivated, task-oriented participants for its internship program, to include 6 - 12 weeks of practical training focused on historic preservation. Under direction and supervision, interns will learn to perform a variety of preservation-related tasks and duties. Interns will be participating in projects focusing on hands-on rehabilitation, surveying conditions, and documenting historic resources.
Description:
Under direct supervision, interns will be expected to participate in a variety of hands-on preservation related projects while working in a public setting.
- Assist in preservation efforts throughout the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District
- Conduct condition assessments, surveys, and documentation of historic structures
- Participate in hands-on carpentry, masonry, finishing, and stabilization projects
- Assist with research, special projects, and other duties as assigned
- Maintain a cooperative and pleasant work relationship with fellow employees, volunteers, and guests of Jekyll Island
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license
- Enrolled in a Bachelor's History program (and in senior year), or enrolled in a Master’s level Historic Preservation program, or be a recent graduate (2 or less years) of Historic Preservation or related program.
- Pre-arranged course credit, if applicable, is the responsibility of any student and his or her institution of learning.
- Hands-on experience preferred
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
- Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty
- Have ability to communicate effectively and listen to directions
Learning Objectives:
This position contributes to the success of the Jekyll Island Museum by assisting in the preservation of the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District, while providing interns with practical work experience following the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties while working on a collection of over 30 historic resources.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to perform work in a variety of different locations including basements, attics, ladders, lifts, and outdoors
- May be exposed to hazards such as moving vehicles.
- May be subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, oils, odors, dusts, mists, or poor ventilation.
- Will be exposed to outdoor summer temperatures
- Must be able to occasionally work unsupervised on assigned tasks
Note: This is a paid internship and shared housing on the Island is available on Jekyll Island for $300.00 per month. If candidate chooses this option they are responsible for paying the housing amount through bi-weekly payroll deduction. Interns will also receive a limited number of free use passes for several of the Island’s amenities, including the water park, tennis and golf.
