JOB SUMMARY: What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The Government-wide direct hire authority for Physical Sciences GS-1301 is being used to fill this position. This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. MAJOR DUTIES: As a Physical Scientist in a science center within the U.S. Geological Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Plans and leads multiple complex research and analysis projects related to wildfire modeling. Contributes to a larger interdisciplinary research team with developing innovative methods for assessing and addressing wildlife risk; integrates recent advances in wildlife behavior and spread modeling. Coordinates and collaborates with scientist, managers, tribal nations, and other internal and external entities. Develops interpretive materials such as scientific reports, project updates, and briefings for dissemination to multiple audiences including projects funders, interagency leadership on fire and fuels management, and other stakeholders. Presents research results in the form of scientific presentation at meetings of scientific organizations. Publishes results in peer reviewed scientific journals. Operate a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver. Above duties are for the GS-11 level. At the higher-grade level, less assistance, instruction, guidance, oversight, review, and supervision will be provided. Physical Demands The work requires some physical exertion and may require prolonged standing in the laboratory environment. Field assignments involve outdoor work where there is considerable walking and climbing over rough or mountainous terrain. Some work requires physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds and crawling in restrictive spaces. Work Environment Work is performed primarily in a field, laboratory or office setting. Work area is adequately lighted.
