JOB SUMMARY: The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Interior Region 3, 4 and 5 is April - October/November but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. MAJOR DUTIES: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be filling positions at the GS-06 and GS-07 grade levels, whereas Badlands National Park will be filling positions only at the GS-06 grade level. Specific work assignments at the GS-06 level include: management of exotic plants using chemical, mechanical, and biological techniques, conduct botanical surveys, collection and management of data and records such as, GPS data and herbicide application, establishment and maintenance of vegetation restoration projects, mix, load, and apply herbicides with ATV, UTV and/or backpack sprayers, may lead field crews and/or groups in projects. At the GS-07 level, you will lead multiple field crews organizing, scheduling and executing established natural resource projects; train others to accurately follow procedures; determine and implement exotic plant control efforts; analyze and provide botanical data for long-term planning efforts; conduct botanical surveys to be used in environmental assessments; develop and implement site restoration plans, etc. Park Information: Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota 75 miles east of Rapid City (population 75,000), and 30 miles from Wall, Kadoka, and Philip. A service station, several churches, and a K-8 school are located in the friendly town of Interior (population 65), 2 miles from park headquarters. Grocery shopping, medical and dental facilities, a post office, and schools K-12 are available in Wall, Kadoka, Philip, and Rapid City. There is plenty of hiking, biking and wildlife viewing available right on our doorstep. The night skies in Badlands National Park are famous and folks travel for long distances to view them. The area surrounding us presents lots of seasonal activities such as winter skiing and summer camping for a few. Training for many activities may be acquired on-the-job. The ATV Rider Course, First Aide/CPR Classes and South Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator License will be given when employee arrives. The required examination for the license may be taken on work time and employee must pass the exam within 30 days of his or her start date. Normal work shifts will be Monday- Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with some weekend, evening work and travel is required. Employee will be stationed at Badlands National Park and travel to other National Parks to assist in weed management. Transportation, lodging, and per diem will be provided while in travel status. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within the scenic resort area on the northeastern shores of Lake Michigan. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, day care, recreational activities, schools, and colleges are readily available within a 30 mile radius from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-80 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Shared government housing may be available for rent. Staff may work on various water bodies including wading in rivers and wetlands, traveling via canoe, and traveling via park ferries to the Manitou Islands. Weekend work is possible, but rare. A portion of time will be dedicated to project logistics and preparatory groundwork, data entry, preparation of Field and Project Reports, assisting with the appraisals of seasonal staff and other duties in the laboratory/office setting.
