Who are we looking for?
GHD has an opening in our Ontario Region for a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Professional who aspires to succeed in a vibrant, well-established company.
GHD’s HSE Team supports the day-to-day business needs for the Ontario Region, including in the areas of heavy construction, engineering design, environmental site services, landfill operations, geotechnical engineering and field inspections, hazardous material spill and emergency response services, materials testing laboratory environments, mining, and construction administration, for a diverse array of private and public sector clients. GHD’s Ontario offices are located in Waterloo, St. Catharines, Mississauga, Toronto, Markham, Whitby, Peterborough and Ottawa.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
- Assist the Ontario Regional HSE Manager in the administration of GHD’s HSE Management System and initiatives.
- Provide support and guidance across all levels of the organization to ensure compliance with and Regional legislative requirements and GHD’s HSE procedures.
- Lead investigations into HSE incidents and near misses, analyze root causes, implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence, ensure timely reporting in accordance with GHD and regulatory requirements, and remain available to respond and prepare reports in a timely manner when needed.
- Provide support and guidance to project teams with the development and implementation of comprehensive Health and Safety plans and Job Safety Environmental Analyses.
- Facilitate Joint Health and Safety Committees/Health and Safety Representative requirements for offices, materials testing laboratories and project sites.
- Conduct inspections of GHD offices and project sites to identify areas of improvement; implement corrective measures and perform follow-up verification.
- Facilitate GHD’s crisis and emergency management programs.
- Support the Regional HSE team with completion of annual internal and external Certificate of Recognition (COR) audits in Ontario.
- Assist with the development of HSE communications and presentations.
- Collaborate with members of the Ontario HSE team to implement HSE action plans and initiatives.
- Promote positive HSE culture across all levels of the organization.
- Perform all other job-related tasks.
- Report to the Ontario Regional HSE Manager.
What you will bring to the team:
- Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or other job-related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of Health and Safety experience preferably in the construction, environmental services, materials testing, hazardous site remediation; and/or consulting required.
- Possession or currently in pursuit of the National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification and field experience, an asset.
- Experience with the IHSA Certificate of Recognition (COR) process or ISO 45001, an asset.
- Proven knowledge and understanding of Canadian/Ontario occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and standards relevant to GHD’s activities.
- Experience conducting health, safety and environment risk analyses, and development of health and Safety plans or equivalent.
- Experience conducting incident investigations.
- Having strong work ethic, self-motivated, energetic, goal oriented.
- Positive team player, proactive thinker, flexible and adaptable.
- Good problem solver with the ability to identify alternative solutions.
- Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proven interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, individually or in a team environment, and exhibiting diplomacy and tact.
- Ability to work unsupervised and as a member of a dynamic team.
- Proficiency in computer systems, namely Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), Adobe, etc.
- Must have a current valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Available for travel within Ontario (approximately 5 % of the working year).
- May be required to complete additional courses as necessary to support the role.
