Job Description and Duties
Will consider Staff Services Analyst. Assists the San Diego Legal Office in defending the State in tort litigation, coordinates the compilation of documents and evaluates all requests for Demands for Inspection/ Production of Documents, etc. Confers with all levels of management and other District personnel to ensure completeness of documents, analyzes and verifies data provided by District staff.
Works with attorneys with trial preparation, scheduling of employees for depositions and trial appearance. Represents Caltrans in Small Claims hearings; reviews claim and prepares defense, attends hearings, and presents the defensive arguments to the hearing officer or judge. Arranges for appropriate District to appear as witness if necessary. Processes claims filed in the District which are under $12,500.
Responsible for receiving, tracking and logging all subpoena requests in database. Responds to requests for information from the public and general public information requests. Reviews requests for public records prior to release of information to ascertain if the record is related to possible or pending legal action against the State.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Associate Governmental Program Analyst/Staff Services Analyst exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: Under the general direction of the Staff Services Manager I, the incumbent will work independently as Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA)(Claims Officer). The Claims Officer is responsible for the entire investigation and evaluation of potential and filed public liability claims arising in the District and will provide support to the attorneys in the San Diego Legal Office.
