Job Description and Duties
Under direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker works with and assists in providing functional guidance to a crew that performs heavy manual labor in the maintenance of state highways, fence & guardrail repair, bridges, roadbed, roadside, functional landscape & vegetation maintenance; graffiti removal; culvert, drainage and ditch inspection and cleaning; litter and debris removal; operates and maintains various equipment and performs general laboring tasks associated with the maintenance of the State Highway System. Assists the supervisor in planning and scheduling duties, developing work plans, conducting safety meetings and scheduling crew assignments. Uses & maintains proper traffic control devices and is responsible for closing ramps, live traffic lanes, freeway connectors and shoulders. Operates manual and power tools. Assists in cleaning up highway spills. May work in confined spaces and in elevated heights. The incumbent may be required to work overtime, work irregular shifts/alternate work schedules including nights, holidays and weekends; may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts and required to respond to emergency situations and calls. May be loaned to other cost centers.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Possession of a valid class B driver's license with tanker (N) vehicle endorsement. Must be able to operate automatic and manual transmissions.
