Industry Hub: CEO Staff Governance Officer
About the Organization
The Global Industry Decarbonization Hub (“Industry Hub”) is a newly established funder collaborative, with a primary objective to enhance the scale and effectiveness of climate philanthropy within the industrial sector. The core mission is to serve as a driving force in the realm of industrial decarbonization, acting as a catalyst for transformative change within the field. The Industry Hub is currently incubated at ClimateWorks Foundation and is supported by a wide community of participating funders and partner regrantors.
Industrial activity – led by production of cement, steel, and chemicals – is responsible for more than a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Industrial emissions have been rising at twice the rate of overall GHG emissions. In the last five years, industrial decarbonization received less than 3% of philanthropic investment on climate. Given the historic underinvestment, many solutions in industry are at an earlier stage than in sectors like power and transportation. However, this sector still needs to deliver emissions reductions on the same 2050 timeline.
To maximize philanthropy’s role in reducing global industrial emissions to near zero by 2050, the Industry Hub aims to:
· Substantially increase the level of funding devoted to industrial decarbonization
· Enable more effective coordination and knowledge sharing among industry-focused funders and field actors
· Improve the effectiveness of philanthropy by developing and strengthening innovative transnational, regional, sectoral, and cross-cutting strategies to decarbonize industry
· Expand the global field of high-capacity leaders and organizations driving industrial decarbonization, especially in critical geographies and sectors that currently have capacity gaps
· Enable long-term sustainability and flexibility for key field actors with larger, longer-term grants than is currently the norm in the space
· Improve the visibility of industrial decarbonization through positive public stories highlighting progress and opportunity
The Industry Hub has a near-term aim to triple total philanthropic funding from $100M/year to $300M/year by the end of 2027. The Industry Hub seeks to flow most of this funding, about $200M in total, through its own pooled fund over this period. The Industry Hub pooled fund currently has $100M+ of committed and high-likelihood contributions.
