COVID-19 Pandemic

Please note that all PSR National staff are currently working remotely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and it is expected that staff will likely continue to telework through 2022, and possibly beyond. However, in anticipation of an eventual return to full or partial on-site work in our national office, we are seeking applicants who either currently reside in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, or who will be willing to relocate here once it is deemed safe to work on-site.

About Physicians for Social Responsibility

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to create a more healthy, just, and peaceful world. Throughout its history, PSR has provided a strong health-focused voice against the development and use of nuclear weapons. Our other major programmatic focus is climate change – another catastrophic disaster that threatens human health and survival. PSR is a co-founder and U.S. affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), and as the U.S. affiliate of this global network, PSR shared in the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. PSR is also a partner organization in the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017. PSR has a national office in Washington, D.C. with chapters across the United States.

The Position

PSR’s Environment and Health (E&H) program amplifies the voice of health professionals to advocate for health-protective measures that strengthen state and federal policy related to climate, energy, and health. The E&H Policy Coordinator reports to the E&H Program Director and serves these key functions:

Monitor federal climate and energy issues, with a focus on harms to health associated with fossil fuels and the benefits to health of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and building electrification.
Identify key moments for taking action. Inform and engage PSR member activists to advocate to Congress, the administration, U.S. EPA, and other government agencies.
Represent PSR in national coalitions working on joint initiatives related to federal climate policy. With those coalitions, represent PSR in meetings and hearings before the U.S. EPA and other federal agencies.
Work with PSR chapters and grassroots members as needed in prioritized states.
Prepare supporting materials including rapid response action alerts, fact sheets, model letters to the editor, comments and letters directed to government officials, and guidance for testimony. Organize occasional webinars.

The Policy Coordinator may also be called on to provide occasional support and assistance to other Environment & Health programs and projects.

Skills and Experience

Experience in policy advocacy, government relations, or similar position.
Familiarity with climate and energy policy issues. Familiarity with these issues from a public health perspective is ideal.
Strong aptitude in connecting with people, networking, and encouraging activism. Experience working with health professionals is a plus.
Strong writing and communication skills.
High degree of self-motivation. Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
Ability to respond to short-term deadlines, balance multiple responsibilities, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
A collegial approach to problem-solving.
Commitment to respecting, involving, and assisting participants from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Experience with designing and facilitating webinars and/or other online events is helpful.

Terms

This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend hours required.
Reports to the Environment & Health Program Director.
Annual Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000.
