POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Manager of Environmental Compliance to oversee the environmental compliance programs for our diverse operations, including 160+ retail locations, multiple manufacturing sites, and distribution centers. This role will ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, manage environmental permits, and coordinate with environmental consultants. The position includes managing one direct report who specializes in hazmat shipping and hazardous waste disposal.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Environmental Permitting:
- Oversee the acquisition, renewal, and compliance of all environmental permits across retail, manufacturing, and distribution locations.
- Ensure all locations comply with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Maintain and update permit documentation and ensure timely submissions to regulatory bodies.
2. Management of Environmental Consultants:
- Select, manage, and coordinate activities of external environmental consultants.
- Oversee environmental assessments, audits, and remediation projects conducted by consultants.
- Review and approve reports and recommendations provided by consultants.
3. Compliance Monitoring:
- Develop and implement environmental compliance programs and policies for all sites.
- Conduct regular compliance audits and inspections to ensure adherence to environmental standards and regulations.
- Identify and address any non-compliance issues promptly.
4. Hazmat Shipping and Hazardous Waste Disposal:
- Supervise one direct report specializing in hazmat shipping and hazardous waste disposal.
- Ensure compliance with DOT regulations and RCRA requirements related to hazmat shipping and hazardous waste disposal.
- Develop and deliver training programs on hazmat shipping and hazardous waste disposal requirements.
5. Reporting and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of all environmental compliance activities.
- Prepare regular reports on environmental performance for senior management.
- Ensure proper documentation and reporting of incidents involving hazardous materials.
6. Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with the Retail Operations Department, regional managers, local managers, and safety boards, as well as manufacturing and distribution teams, to ensure environmental compliance.
- Provide guidance and support to all locations on environmental issues.
- Communicate environmental policies and procedures to all relevant stakeholders.
7. Risk Management:
- Conduct risk assessments related to environmental compliance and develop mitigation strategies.
- Implement emergency response plans for environmental incidents.
8. Continuous Improvement:
- Stay up-to-date with changes in environmental regulations and best practices.
- Identify opportunities for improving environmental performance and sustainability.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance environmental compliance.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in environmental compliance management, preferably within a multi-location environment including retail, manufacturing, and distribution.
- In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations, including RCRA and DOT hazmat shipping requirements.
- Proven experience in managing environmental permits and working with environmental consultants.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or other relevant environmental certifications.
- Experience with ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
- Master’s degree in a related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
Frequent:
- Oversee the acquisition, renewal, and compliance of all environmental permits for retail, manufacturing, and distribution locations.
- Manage and coordinate activities of external environmental consultants.
- Conduct regular compliance audits and inspections.
- Supervise the hazmat shipping and hazardous waste disposal specialist.
- Ensure continuous compliance with environmental regulations across all sites.
- Maintain and update environmental compliance documentation.
- Prepare regular reports on environmental performance for senior management.
- Provide training and guidance on environmental compliance issues to all relevant stakeholders.
- Collaborate with various departments, including Retail Operations, manufacturing, and distribution teams, to ensure cohesive environmental compliance efforts.
Infrequent:
- Develop and present an annual environmental compliance plan that outlines goals, initiatives, and resource requirements.
- Lead response and recovery efforts for significant environmental incidents, including coordinating with external agencies and stakeholders.
- Review and update environmental compliance policies and procedures to maintain cohesiveness across the company's environmental program.
- Lead strategic environmental projects and initiatives aimed at improving sustainability and compliance.
- Prepare for and coordinate external regulatory audits, responding to findings and implementing required corrective actions.
- Organize advanced training and certification programs for EHS staff and relevant employees.
- Plan and execute emergency preparedness drills for environmental incidents.
- Prepare and deliver presentations to stakeholders on environmental performance and initiatives.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to travel up to 30%

Occasionally: Lifting up to 50 lbs.
Additional Physical Requirements:
- Aspects of this position will be outside and may require walking over uneven terrain and/or collecting samples.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:
Develops objectives and general policies and procedures for a specific program or functional area of responsibility within general scope of established operational goals and plans. Day-to-day work and decisions do not require direction or review by immediate supervisor. End results are reviewed by supervisor.
