An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to join our team on a permanent basis.
This position is responsible for deploying EHS requirements and creating a mature EHS culture promoting a safe environment. As well as providing technical expertise, the holder is responsible for influencing line management and promoting leading EHS behaviours across the site. The holder is responsible for advising management on compliance with EHS legal requirements.

Key responsibilities
Leadership Responsibilities
- Show and monitor leadership in all areas of EHS by influencing, supporting and challenging Line Management in the prioritisation and deployment of EHS requirements.
- Develop the workforce at all levels to an appropriate set of clearly defined EHS competencies, ensuring that identified EHS training needs are delivered to a defined schedule as required by the business
- Is visible and approachable within the workplace, and coaches others on how to demonstrate required EHS behaviours. Challenges undesirable behaviours and consistently sends a message that safety is a core value.
- Establish and lead site Safety Committees to establish a culture of EHS ownership at the site.
- Lead EHS audits both internal and external. Participate in site EHS inspections, SOCs & safety tours as appropriate.
- Actively participate in Global EHS meetings / discussions. Be willing to share best practices and promote standardisation across the company.
- Self-directed on day-to-day tasks, with key-stakeholder buy-in on larger, more complicated initiatives and programs.
- Develop KPIs and track site performance to drive improved EHS performance improvement.
- Assist in assignment of chemical intermediates and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients to control bands
- Responsibility for maintaining and improving handling of chemicals and APIs on-site e.g., COSHH, riskassessment etc.
- Responsible for ensuring any safety related CAPAs are raised with root cause analysis investigated and preventative plan put in place.
Legal Responsibilities
- Identify applicable EHS legislation and advise management on compliance.
- Advise and participate in Site Management in compliance with EHS requirements including Policies, guidance, standards and EHS reporting requirements.
- Implement occupational health exposure monitoring and advise on control strategies to achieve agreed exposure limits.
- Liaise with external parties on compliance with legal permits and other requirements and ensure all permits and licenses are maintained properly.
- Ensure all emergency evacuation plans and procedures are robust, executed and continuously improved. EHS Processes and tools
- Establish standardized EHS systems, initiatives and processes that are consistent with across the company.
- Develop and maintain EHS Management systems (certified systems such as ISO 14001 where required).
- Assist in Accident investigations, ensuring appropriate root cause analysis is carried out and improvement actions recorded.
- Promote the use of leading indicators such as Learning Events and Safety Observation Conversations.
- Track participation in Leading activities and report performance to management.
- Ensure risk assessment processes are in place for all activities and EHS is fully considered in management of change processes on site.
Technical Responsibilities
- Provide technical advice on all areas of EHS, liaising with Global EHS and external specialists where relevant.
- Identify EHS Training needs. Coordinate training with providers and deliver training personally where required.
- Analyse leading and lagging performance ensuring leading activities are focused on areas of concern.
- Track and trend incidents and issues at the site to ensure clear, data driven focus for value added activities.
- Ensure processes are in place to report all required KPIs via Velocity EHS and ensure monthly reporting deadline are met.
- Provide support & technical guidance to the site in the handling, storage and shipping hazardous waste.
- Manage REACH & SDS Program for materials used, received and/or processed at the facility.
- Ensure inspection and preventative maintenance programmes are in place for all critical Safety equipment.
- Ensure all L&D requirements are being met for measurable EHS competency. Identify EHS-related competence gaps and source external, or deliver internal, training where required.
- Manage all IH and OH programs applicable to the site.
- Identify and review CAPEX projects and MOCs to ensure all EHS aspects and impacts are considered and proper risk assessments are conducted.
- Support management of EHS Budget along with General Manager / Site Head.
What you need for the role
To succeed in this role you will have;
- Bachelor’s Degree in occupational safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering or similar. Alternatively, Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering + post graduate qualification in EHS (e.g., Diploma) required
- Experience in an industrial or research environment, pharmaceutical or chemical industries in positions related to occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or environmental experience required
- Experience in working effectively in complex Matrix organisations required
- Significant experience in building and maintaining positive relationships internally and externally to the organisation required
- Working knowledge of the applicable international, national & local Standards and legislation is required.
- International experience in leading CDMO and manufacturing environment preferred
- Recognised Safety Qualification such as NEBOSH, BOHS degree or IOSH Membership preferred
- Master’s degree in EHS and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Safety Professional preferred.
