Master Thesis - A mobile 3D lidar for surveillance systems in indoor environments
Job Description
Title: A mobile 3D lidar for surveillance systems in indoor environments
Category: Computer science, sensor fusion
Scope: Master thesis, 2 students completing 30 credits (20 weeks) each
Background
While initially 3D lidars have been limited to research environments or small industrial applications (e.g. high-end automotive cases), the recent scaling up in production, and therefore cost reduction, have made them a viable solution in many unmanned applications (e.g. surveillance and monitoring). In this thesis we want to investigate the usage of a 3D lidar installed on a indoor mobile robotic platform: such sensors offer promising capabilities in terms of scene understanding and anomaly detection by means of non-invasive sensing (e.g. w.r.t. privacy issues). The aim of this thesis is to understand to which extent a small 3D lidar can complement or even substitute more conventional sensors typically installed on a mobile platform that performs surveillance task in indoor environments, for example automated patrolling.
Goal
The thesis will be focused on the integration of a 3D lidar sensor on a existing robotic platform. After the related hw integration, the students will have to focus on data processing techniques (possibly fusing the lidar information with the one provided by the navigation system) that effectively fit surveillance scenarios. To this aim, the students will be required to investigate existing literature and propose one or more techniques that will be evaluated by experimental tests. Such evaluation will cover several criteria, e.g. effectiveness/reliability/viability, typically used in the surveillance domain.
Who are you?
For this thesis proposal we target students that have an interest in working with robotics and that would like to apply this to a realistic scenario. Most likely, you are studying a Master’s program in Computer Science / Robotics / Automatic control or similar. It is considered useful to have a general understanding of dynamical systems as well as embedded programming as the experimental part will be an important aspect of the thesis. You live in, or near, Lund, or you are willing to move here. The work will be done at Axis.
OK, I am interested! What do I do now?
You are valuable to us – how nice that you are interested in one of our proposals! There are a few things for you to keep in mind when applying.
Applications are accepted in both Swedish and English, and you apply via the proposal advert. Note that English literature is expected to be read during the thesis execution.
The announced thesis is open only to students affiliated with a Swedish University/College either directly or via an exchange program.
When the thesis proposal states that it includes two students working together, we would like you to apply in pairs. In these cases, send one application each but make sure to clearly state in your application who your co-applicant is. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Please attach your CV and University/College grade summary.
