About the job
Hydrogen is considered one of the main enablers to achieve Net-Zero carbon emissions by 2050. According to Hydrogen Council, more than 1000 projects are already announced globally which is expected an investment of 320 billion USD.
The shift toward green hydrogen is critical for industries aiming to reduce environmental impact. Ammonia production is an important area where sustainable systems can make a significant impact. It is essential not only as a fertilizer but also as a potential fuel and energy carrier which makes an efficient and environmentally friendly production important. Traditional ammonia synthesis is energy-intensive and reliant on fossil [1] fuel-based hydrogen. However, optimizing the integration of green hydrogen produced via PEM electrolysis into ammonia production offers a promising way to increase energy efficiency. Alfa Laval with its advanced heat exchanger technology, is well positioned to support this transition by optimizing energy usage and heat integration within the ammonia production process.
Master thesis description
Alfa Laval is a leading company in heat exchange manufacturing which is crucial to improve energy efficiency. The objective of the study is to calculate how much energy can be saved by doing heat integration.
The project is expected to advance knowledge on optimizing green hydrogen in ammonia production using PEM electrolysis. This includes analysis of the efficiency gains and operational considerations of PEM [1] produced hydrogen. Additionally, by optimizing energy integration with Alfa Laval’s heat exchanger technology, the project will demonstrate how to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs.
