Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Office Chief of the Office of Safe System Approach Integration, a Supervising Transportation Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent, a Senior Transportation Engineer (Specialist), serves as the Safety Projects Liaison. The incumbent supports the alignment of Caltrans' highway safety projects and initiatives with the Safe System Approach. The incumbent liaises with Headquarters (HQ), districts, programs, and divisions and provides technical expertise on the application of the Safe System Approach on highway and freeway projects at urban, suburban, and rural locations. The Safe System Approach aims to eliminate fatal and serious injuries for all road users. It does so through a holistic view of the road system that first anticipates human mistakes and aims to keep impact energy on the human body at tolerable levels. Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. - Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
- A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required.
The SOQ is a narrative of the education, training, skills, and experience that best qualify a candidate for the position. The SOQ also serves as documentation of the candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ must be no more than two (2) pages in length and must address the following questions in the same order as listed below. Resumes are accepted but are not required. - Describe your experience with managing multiple complex projects. Specifically detail your experience successfully solving complex problems using a logical, systematic, and sequential approach, weighing priorities, and recognizing underlying issues to coordinate tasks and meet delivery milestones.
- Describe your ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) with a wide range of internal and external partners on complex technical matters.
- Provide examples that demonstrate your experience working with various stakeholders, including your ability to identify, communicate, and resolve complex or politically sensitive project delivery issues.
