The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
A Welder is responsible for skilled and semi-skilled labor tasks in a wide variety of job assignments. The Welder is responsible for a wide variety of welding, brazing, and metal cutting jobs on ferrous and nonferrous metals. Work is performed under the general direction of a manager.
As a Maintenance Technician, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
- Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest - do not wait to be asked.
- Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
- Preheat and clean metals.
- Layout, cut and fit materials for welding.
- Weld machinery and equipment using acetylene or electric arc welding equipment.
- Perform cutting and welding on structural steel, pipe, and fittings, crankcases, radiators, tanks, brackets, truck frames, and automobile bodies.
- Braze various nonferrous metals.
- Ability to weld mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum metals.
- Inspect, brush, and grind welds.
- Design, build, and maintain guillotine doors and other components of animal enclosures.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
- Able to understand, foresee, and apply necessary safety precautions applicable to the Zoo environment.
- Able to read, write and understand English.
- Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, methods, and tools of the welding trade.
- Knowledge of machinist and sheet metal work.
- Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and broken parts.
- Ability to layout welding work and to make simple estimates of time and material requirements.
- Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the trade.
- Valid driver's license.
- Two-year’s experience as a journeyman welder.
