The Writer/Editor & Content Specialist will play a key role in creating engaging content that brings to life the mission and work of Save the Redwoods League. Your stories and associated content will be leveraged to build our brand, raise funds, and engage stakeholders and the broader redwoods community. The colleague we are looking for is a skilled and imaginative copywriter, editor, and storyteller who can work independently and as part of a team to produce clear and compelling content for a variety of channels and mediums while maintaining the League’s voice and tone.

The Writer/Editor & Content Specialist will be responsible for the following:
- In collaboration with editorial supervisor, provide story development, writing, editing, and/or production supervision of print and digital communications, including the League’s magazine, blog, educational materials, newsletters, website content, social media, presentations, and fundraising materials
- In collaboration with the editorial supervisor, maintain consistency, accuracy, and the League’s voice and visual brand throughout all print and digital communications
- Conduct story research, including thorough interviews with community members, partners, donors, volunteers, staff, and members of the public, to inform marketing content across a variety of channels
- Monitor resources within and outside the organization for announcements of breakthroughs, awards, important reports, tribal news, political news, etc.
- Maintain and establish relationships with partners, volunteers, and donors, including identifying those who are willing to share their stories for various fundraising and advocacy activities.
- Pitch story ideas and come up with innovative and impactful ways to showcase the work of the League
- Collaborate with Editorial Supervisor to grow and maintain our story bank, including developing stories that can be leveraged across the organization for fundraising, advocacy, building partnerships, and more
- Interpret creative direction and adapt points from creative briefs into persuasive content
- Support the development of messaging, talking points, and other communications content as needed
- Provide punch-ups, copyedits, and proofreading to existing content drafts
- Support Digital Marketing Specialist with social media content
- Support other teams and departments with writing, editing, and content creation as needed.
- Identify and solve issues associated with producing marketing collateral in a dynamic environment with frequently shifting parameters; escalate to Editorial Supervisor or other MarComm leadership as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, writing, communications, or marketing; or 5+ years of directly relevant experience
- 5+ years of experience working as a journalist, content writer, or public relations specialist with a strong portfolio of writing samples across topics and channels. Experience writing and crafting content for diverse audiences
- Experience with non-profit, conservation, and science communications a plus. Experience ghost writing for senior executives and other thought leaders a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to understand and convey complex ideas in a clear, concise, and engaging manner to a lay audience
- Strong story editing, line editing, and proofreading skills
- Ability to generate and pitch creative ideas; ability to take stories from idea to completion with little oversight
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment; ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
- Ability to work with a highly collaborative team and proactively collect, manage, and transfer knowledge
- Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges, and issues
- Ability to work independently, with excellent time management and organizational skills
- Familiarity with digital communication tools and social media platforms. Digital media creation experience a plus.
- Working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style and AP Stylebook
- Personable with a sense of humor, grace, patience and warm professionalism

Work Schedule:
This role is hybrid with a minimum of 1-2 days onsite in our San Francisco headquarters per week. Our weekly in office day is Tuesday (when everyone living in the SF Bay Area is required to come in). Additional days are based on business needs and/or personal preference.
Compensation & Benefits:
As a full-time salaried employee, you will be eligible for full benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation annually plus holidays, and a 401k retirement plan, currently with an up to 8% company match. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience and internal/external equity considerations; the salary range for this position is $ 82,250 -91,500 per year.
