The Lead Interdisciplinary Systems Engineer creates automated packaging platforms and supporting systems to enable faster and more efficient delivery to Amazon's customers.
The primary role of the Lead Interdisciplinary Systems Engineer is to lead the conceptualization and technical development of next-generation packaging platforms and supporting automation systems. This involves designing, simulating, and building packaging machinery and automation that simplifies the fulfillment network, reduces delivery times, and exceeds customer packaging expectations.
Key job responsibilities
-Define, expand, and explore the design space for complex, multidisciplinary robotics and automation problems
-Identify and analyze the cross-functional tradeoffs between design alternatives, including impact on performance, schedule, cost, risk, complexity, and scale
-Break down and frame problems using CONOPS, use cases, structural/functional decompositions, and other system representations to clarify needs and align technical teams
-Identify design choices to ensure our products are safe, reliable, and usable, and can be deployed and supported at Amazon scale
-Build quantitative models and analyses (Excel, MATLAB, Python, internal tools) to conduct trade studies, refine requirements, and understand key system drivers across the integrated systems of systems
-Perform technical risk assessments (such as TRL, Gap Analysis, FMEDA, HARA, etc.), devise mitigation plans, and create system test strategies
-Develop and communicate system integration and evaluation strategies and plans in support of program learning, technical risk reduction, verification, and validation
-Drive and prioritize execution of system test campaigns that span lab and field testing environments in collaboration with subsystem development and test teams (test readiness reviews, test execution, post-test analysis and reporting)
Mentor junior engineers in systems engineering best practices, and participate in hiring of new team members
About the team
Aligning mechatronics and packaging into one organization, (Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging, MSP) enables Amazon to develop, deploy and scale automated solutions across the Amazon Fulfillment Network, especially from Pick to SLAM for the Automated Robotics Sortable (ARS) network. This group works backwards from deep customer insights to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into brownfield and greenfield deployments with safety as a top priority. In addition, Sustainable Packaging solutions are a thread that impacts and connects all parts of the Amazon Stores supply chain and customer experience. They take ownership for the entire packaging experience including selling partner design, first/middle/last mile and total customer experience. They eliminate waste and packaging wherever possible. Where Amazon added packaging is required, they are transitioning from single-use plastics to curbside recyclable paper-based materials.
-Experience with eliciting and clarifying business and end user needs, and connecting those needs to system concepts, requirements, and designs
-Experience leading technical collaborations and creating alignment across diverse groups (e.g., technical disciplines, subsystem teams, development partners)
-Experience identifying and analyzing dependencies, tradeoffs, and sensitivities across multi-disciplinary systems
-Understanding of systems engineering tools and best practices, and the ability to tailor the processes to help new product development teams go fast
-Experience developing test strategies and plans for complex hardware/software systems or system of systems.
-BS or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Mathematics, Physics, or another STEM discipline
10+ years of experience
-Experience developing and supporting hardware/software systems or systems or systems across the product life cycle
-Experience developing structured systems engineering artifacts (e.g., requirements, test cases, etc.) using requirements management tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS, Helix)
-Experience with developing safety-critical systems and supporting related regulatory compliance needs
-Experience with 1 or more relevant domains: Industrial Automation, Robotic Vehicles/Manipulation, Automotive, Medical Devices, Enterprise and/or Embedded Software, Autonomy, Perception and Controls, Human Centered Design
9+ years of experience in system design
