The Analytical Solutions Division (ASD) of Applied Research Associates (ARA), Inc., continues to grow and we have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Enivronmental Health & Safety Specialist on-site in Huntsville, AL. The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist develops and maintains EHS programs, policies and procedures for industrial facilities, ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations. Reviews safety processes throughout the facilities; analyzes incident report statistics to identify trends and prioritize safety mitigation efforts; identifies root causes of accidents; and develops and implements support systems/processes (such as safety rewards and recognitions, safety communications, etc.) to achieve safety goals. Environmental Health & Safety Specialist must be an effective communicator to promote workplace safety and instill safety into the culture of the workforce.
What you’ll do as an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist:
- Develop, write and implement safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all relevant EHS regulations, such as accident investigations, corrective actions, safety inspections/audits, lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work permits, etc
- Performs job hazard assessments by participating in processes and procedures and researching industry best practices and regulatory requirements
- Drive best in class safety culture change initiatives and behavioral based safety programs with a zero-incident focus
- Stay up to date on all relevant EHS regulations and industry best practices to ensure compliance and continuous improvement
- Manage, maintain and monitor all environmental, health and safety management activities including, but not limited to, SDS files, hazard communication program, hazardous waste program, hazardous materials program, etc
- Analyze incident and near miss reports from workforce to identify trends, emerging hazards and recommend and implement mitigation efforts
- Communicate regularly with management and relevant stakeholders on EHS performance and progress towards goals
- Lead and facilitate safety committees and meetings to promote employee engagement and involvement in EHS initiatives
- Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess and improve EHS performance
Must Haves as an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist:
- Bachelor’s Degree AND 2+ years relevant work experience; OR a H.S. diploma (or equivalent) and 8+ years’ relevant experience in Environmental Health & Safety within a DoD manufacturing field
- Must be a US Citizen
- Must complete RCRA & DOT HAZMAT certifications within 6 months of hire
- Ability to obtain & maintain DoD Secret Clearance
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and industry specific manuals
- Ability to write advanced reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of the organization
- Ability to function independently in a multi-task environment, as well as part of a team. Ability to multi-task and maintain organization in a fast paced, changing environment
- Understanding and application of safe work practices, operations and maintenance practices, to recognize hazardous situations and recommend corrective measures
- Working knowledge of OSHA & EPA regulations as well as ANSI, and other applicable EHS guidelines and industry standards
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work with a variety of stakeholders
- Supporting teams working in environments of sitting, sitting for long periods of time, pushing, pulling, standing, standing for long periods of time, reaching, grasping, bending, and stooping and candidate must be able to lift up to 50lbs
Nice to Have/Preferred:
- Active / current SECRET Clearance from the US Department of Defense
- EHS Certifications (ASP, CSP, GSP, TSP, CIH, CHMM, SMS, OHST)
