Pay Range: To maintain internal equity, we have identified the starting range for this position at the Oakland Zoo as $27 - $30.94 per hour. An offer within this range will be determined by the experience and qualifications of a candidate and will be our best and final compensation offer.
Finalist candidates will need to complete a paid on-site working interview to be considered.
Position Summary
Maintenance Technicians play a key role in making Oakland Zoo a pleasant and enjoyable place for our guests and animals by providing maintenance for facilities and vehicles. They provide thoughtful and responsive customer service to internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, park visitors, contractors etc.) guests while enjoying the fresh air and scenic splendor of our 100 acre property. They demonstrate excellent judgement in all activities and positive leadership skills when completing projects while supervising Maintenance Helpers.
Essential Job Duties:
- Perform routine repairs and maintenance of zoo facilities and vehicles.
- Work independently and with little supervision on maintenance projects around the zoo.
- Learn Aerial Systems (the Gondola and Sky Ride).
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Responsible for performing all routine and assigned maintenance per A.N.S.I., manufacturer, and CSC Maintenance Department standards.
- Perform painting and carpentry duties as needed.
- Undergo further training as needed.
- Oversee maintenance helpers.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
Who You Are:
- At least 18 years of age.
- California Class C Driver’s License and good driving record (ability to obtain approval from Zoo Insurance Carrier).
- At least 2 years' experience in professional maintenance position.
- Journeyman level experience in related trades.
- Must possess skills in the safe use of tools and equipment associated with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and welding trades; ability to operate powered equipment normally found in maintenance operations
- Basic knowledge of general construction practices is required in some or all of the above listed skills.
- Excellent judgment, ability to follow detailed instructions, and leadership skills are necessary to complete projects/assignments and oversee Maintenance Helper.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and in all types of weather.
