Pay Range: To maintain internal equity, we have identified the starting pay for this position at the Oakland Zoo as $23.50 per hour. An offer at this rate will be our best and final compensation offer.
Position Summary
The Lead Janitor plays a vital role in making Oakland Zoo a pleasant and enjoyable place for our staff and guests by carefully maintaining the Zoo Grounds and Facilities and ensuring that all general office maintenance tasks are completed by the janitorial team. They provide thoughtful and responsive customer service to internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, park visitors, contractors etc.) guests while tending to their assigned areas. This role is under the supervision of the Janitorial Manager and Janitorial Supervisor.
Essential Job Duties:
- Under the direction of Janitorial Manger, the lead Janitor is responsible of ensuring all general office maintenance tasks are completed by staff members including, but not limited to trash removal; dusting; cleaning and re-stocking supplies in restrooms, breakrooms; sweeping and mopping floors; vacuuming; window washing; buffing floors; stripping and waxing floors; carpet cleaning.
- Ensuring that all staff turn in the Janitorial check list/log sheets are turned in daily to Manager of department
- Utility work as directed by supervisor including, but not limited to moving furniture, assisting in loading, unloading and distribution of supplies, servicing of lobbies and high public use areas, servicing complaints and performing special cleaning.
- Ensure daily cleaning assignments are completed and that routine checks are conducted/completed to maintain cleanliness throughout the Zoo.
- Maintain supply and equipment inventory as directed and keep janitor closets clean and orderly.
- Responsible of ensuring all staff Complete and submit accurate time/log sheets; work adjusted schedules and/or overtime as required.
- Maintain a safe working environment and report any unsafe conditions to supervisor. Report accidents, and any out-of-order equipment in the buildings (e.g., leaking or broken fixtures) to supervisor and/or Maintenance Dept.
- Read and follow label instructions on chemicals/cleaning materials, follow proper operating instructions for powered equipment, and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Operate powered equipment typically used in janitorial operations; performing simple preventive maintenance on equipment as needed or directed.
- Drive Zoo cart or other Zoo vehicles as directed.
- Demonstrates superior customer service with customers, both internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, visitors, customers, etc).
- Demonstrates knowledge of, and supports, the East Bay Zoological Society’s mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of behavior.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
Who You Are:
- At least 18 years of age.
- Must have 1 year of Janitor experience
- Ability to operate powered equipment normally found in janitorial operations
- Ability to organize work and follow cleaning schedules
- Ability to work with the public
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Able to bend and twist, lift, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for long periods of time (8-hour shifts or more)
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs
- Must have a current California Driver’s License and maintain a good D.M.V. Driving Record (that satisfies the Zoo’s Insurance Carrier).Must be able to drive relevant Zoo vehicles (janitorial cart, etc.).
Bonus if you have:
- High School diploma or equivalent G.E.D1 or more years of solid janitorial experience.
- Knowledge of total hard floor care and carpet care.
- Knowledge of general office maintenance.
