JOB SUMMARY: The Office of Environmental Management is responsible for the safe cleanup of the environmental legacy resulting from five decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. The EM work is being done in 11 states and the lifecycle cost of the program is currently estimated to be over 330 billion dollars and will span beyond 2075. MAJOR DUTIES: As the General Engineer you will: Serve as a Departmental contact with outside individuals and organizations for matters pertaining to the assigned programs/project. Evaluate engineering programs/project needs and prepare documentation (i.e., budget, procurement, SOWs, etc.) to support those needs. Serve in an advisory and/or consultant capacity to other engineers, staff, and management officials both within and outside of the Department of Energy on unusual, difficult, or controversial technical engineering matters. Provide expert opinion and recommendation relative to planning, organizing, and implementing engineering projects and processes. Conduct in-depth analysis of technical engineering issues, requirements and developmental efforts to resolve major conflicts, unique issues and engineering uncertainties. Develop innovative recommendations for advancing programs and/or methods; and implement significant projects representing an important segment of the Department of Energy mission and operating programs. Evaluate and make recommendation on the value and applicability of new or improved technology, strategies, trends and or applications. Develop or collaborate in the formulation of new standards, applications, concepts, or theories to change existing knowledge and extending an understanding of phenomena. Give presentations on program/project objectives, content, and progress to a variety of professional audiences. Attend professional society meetings, other professional symposia, and conferences to remain cognizant of developments in the field and to exchange ideas with other engineers and professionals in related fields. Represent the organizational unit in intradepartmental meetings for exchange of information on research, development, demonstration, and evaluation of engineering technologies.
