This Opportunity
Bay West is seeking to grow our Regulated Materials Assessment and Industrial Hygiene services by adding an Environmental Scientist / Asbestos Project Scientist to our team. You will work on-site at project/client facilities performing asbestos, lead, and other regulated material sampling and abatement oversight, air monitoring, and air sample analysis. You must have the ability to assess the condition of building materials and quantify regulated materials and serve as field supervisor for asbestos removal projects in compliance with and enforcing regulations and client requirements.
Your Key Responsibilities
You will support and conduct industrial hygiene assessments/surveys at facilities and also support Bay West’s environmental consulting service line as an Environmental Scientist.
In this position you will report to Bay West’s St. Paul office but will allow flexible home office reporting (needs to be in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area) when work task appropriate.
- Conduct hazardous materials surveys and inspections
- Conduct asbestos inspections
- Conduct air monitoring activities using personal sampling pumps
- Provide technical and field support on various environmental site assessments; investigation of contaminated soil, sediment, and groundwater; construction observation; and preparation of drilling logs, geologic maps, cross-sections and technical reports
- Oversee the proper excavation of contaminated soil during remediation and construction projects.
- Oversee various highway construction projects as well as conducting roadway preconstruction environmental investigations and bridge inspections
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers in a courteous and professional manner.
- Provide open communication with Team Leader on ways to improve Bay West techniques, operations, and functions
- Prepare technical documents including Work Plans, Budgets, Hazardous Materials Assessment Reports, Pre-Demolition Survey Reports, Annual Monitoring Reports (AMR), and Corrective Action (CA) reports
- Provide support to the project manager with the coordination of field activities and preparation of various documents
- Support cost estimates and proposals & effectively qualify and select subcontractors
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
- Must be comfortable and able to work while wearing Level C Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes a full-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) along with Tyvek and Saranex suits.
- Occasionally the position may require working evenings, weekends and extended out of town working assignments.
- Outstanding technical writing and communication skills
- Must foster friendly, positive, productive, and team relationships
- MDH Certified Asbestos Inspector
- MDH Certified Asbestos Site Supervisor
- MDH 2-Day Asbestos Air Sampling Certificate of Completion
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Certification and/or up to date on 8-hour refresher
- Completed NIOSH 582 equivalency course training
Preferred Qualifications
- BS or BA - Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science or Related
- 3 to 5 years of experience conducting regulated material surveys and/or air monitoring
- Must be willing and able to travel to various sites throughout the Midwest up to 25% of the time
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive motions: substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers (including reaching)
- Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. over an 8-hour period and occasionally up to 50 lbs. over a four-hour period.
- Able to work at elevated heights.
- Frequent exposure to non-hazardous and hazardous work environments including contaminated air, soil, dust, fumes, smoke and other toxins
- Ability to work outside in varying conditions, such as high heat, high humidity and extreme cold in remote locations.
