Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the business world and sustainability regulations and requirements are on the rise. At Merck, sustainability is a crucial element of the corporate strategy and Procurement is a key function to ensure compliance with those regulations throughout its supply chain. Procurement also is responsible for ensuring high-quality reporting on our sustainability practices and creating transparency along its supply chains. We are seeking a seasoned sustainability professional to collaborate with us in achieving our ambitious sustainability goals.
Your Role: This position will play a key role in continuously improving our performance on various ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) issues. You will lead or support various ESG initiatives managed by our Procurement team, focusing on ensuring compliance with relevant environmental laws and regulations to minimize risks to our company. Additionally, you will proactively seek opportunities to enhance our sustainability practices, thereby helping us elevate our sustainability reporting standards and protect and support the environment and the communities we operate in.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree either in a technical area (e.g., environmental science, engineering, etc.) or in an administrative field (e.g., business, legal, etc.)
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience on ESG frameworks.
- Proven working experience in sustainability regulations applicable to procurement activities, such as the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, EU Packaging Directive 94/62/EC, as well as good knowledge of upcoming regulations like Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, EU Deforestation Act, etc.
- A good understanding of sustainability reporting requirements (e.g. ESRS, CSRD) and standards like ISO 14001 and ISO 26000 is preferred.
- Expertise in ESG topics like biodiversity protection, conflict minerals, human rights, water and waste management, or circular economy, is desirable.
- Familiarity with digital tools/solutions for supply chain mapping to identify environmental and social risks and opportunities.
- Project management experience is required.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data into meaningful conclusions and solve problems.
- Experience working with ERP systems, particularly SAP is a clear advantage.
- Effective communication and engagement with colleagues from different areas of the company, as well as external partners (e.g., consultants)
- Adaptability, attention to details and good time management skills.
- Ability to work remotely, independently and as part of a virtual team.
- Strong presentation skills, fluency in English.
