Essential Functions:
- Monitors product throughout manufacturing process and retrieves samples from the mill for testing.
- Prepares samples for testing by sawing, cutting, grinding, straightening, gauge marking and labeling.
- Examines and tests product samples using structured methodologies to ensure compliance with ASTM and CSRM specifications.
- Determines sample physical properties including yield, tensile strength, elongation, reduction of area, internal flaws, dimensions, weight, brand, surface quality, straightness, grade changes and hardness. Communicates findings to rolling mill crew, shipping crews and/or management.
- Responds to crew requests for additional testing or inspection.
- Maintains both electronic and paper documentation detailing product disposition. Sends appropriate notifications.
- Performs routine maintenance on machinery and equipment and ensures accuracy of dimensional measuring instruments. Seek assistance with repair or upkeep as necessary.
Performance Standards:
- Knowledge of equipment, technologies, terminology, and practices related to metallurgy and quality control.
- Must possess knowledge and skill in laboratory practices and procedures.
- Must possess strong mathematical aptitude for routine calculations.
- Ability to operate the tools, equipment, hardware and software necessary to perform the duties of this position. This includes working knowledge of and ability to effectively use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, a protractor, micrometers, scales, Cadwelds, tape measures, a deformation gauge and equipment such as clamps, ladders, punch and hammer, a personal computer, printer, and Microsoft Office applications. Machinery used to perform job duties include tensile, bend and upset machine.
- Must possess strong communication skills, both written and oral, and ability to convey technical information to non-technical staff to address questions and/or provide training when necessary.
- Must possess strong organizational skills and detail orientation to closely follow procedures and instructions, to maintain legible and accurate records and to prioritize duties in busy situations.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team and to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
Physical Demands:
- Climbing: Frequently. Ascending or descending stairs or stepladders on a daily basis.
- Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching: Frequently. When needing to access supplies or testing equipment or to retrieve samples or place/remove bins.
- Standing/Walking: Continually. Within laboratory as well as outside or within manufacturing plant.
- Reaching: Frequently. To retrieve supplies, equipment or files/paperwork, move equipment, or to place/remove bins and retrieve samples.
- Pushing/Pulling/Lifting: Frequently. To move items within the laboratory or within the manufacturing plant, to lift or handle samples (on occasion up to 60 lbs. unassisted several times a day) and to push/pull a cart bearing samples weighing up to 200 lbs.
- Grasping: Frequently. To move office supplies, equipment, or samples, to write, or to operate tools and machinery.
- Repetitive Motions of the hands/wrists/fingers: Frequently. To perform office duties such as the entering of data into a PC and to perform laboratory testing.
- Sitting: Occasionally. Some job duties such as data entry or taking measurements can be performed while sitting.
Use of Senses:
- Talking in Person/By Telephone or radio: Continually. To communicate with co-workers or supervisors, to gather or relay information.
- Hearing: Continually. To listen, in person and over the phone/radio, and to understand despite a potentially loud environment. Ability to detect equipment malfunction or irregularities in tools or machinery.
- Vision: Continually. To read either paperwork or information on a computer monitor. Good visual acuity necessary for safety reasons in a manufacturing environment and essential to ability to perform the duties of the job. Must be able to see the physical characteristics of a sample and to view hairline cracks with the aid of a magnifier.
- Smell: Continually. To detect irregularities or hazards such as gas, fire, smoke or fumes.
- Touch: Continually. To use tools, equipment and materials to perform the duties of the job. To enter or retrieve data from a computer.
Environmental:
Work is typically performed in a variety of environments including indoors, outdoors or in an industrial manufacturing setting. A worker in this position will often be subject to outdoor environmental conditions such as snow, rain, heat for frequent but short periods of time, and plant conditions such as dust/dirt, noise, uneven or debris strewn walking surfaces, and temperature extremes while performing job duties. PPE is required within the plant and will be provided to you by the company.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in chemistry or physics or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience in metallurgy a plus.
