We are seeking an innovative R&D Engineer in Hydrogen Systems to join the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, the UK’s leading technology innovation centre for offshore wind, wave, and tidal energy. Based in Blyth, with flexibility for remote work, you’ll be part of a team driving the UK’s hydrogen ambitions.
In this role, you will contribute to cutting-edge research and development, focusing on integrating offshore renewable energy with hydrogen systems and energy storage. You’ll work on innovative solutions that enhance the UK’s clean energy transition, tackling challenges in renewable energy integration, storage, and grid efficiency.
Working closely with industry and academic partners, you’ll help shape hydrogen projects and explore emerging technologies in electrolysers and fuel cells. This role is key in supporting ORE Catapult’s mission to lead in renewable energy innovation while helping the UK meet its sustainability goals.

What will I do?
As an R&D Engineer, you will contribute to cutting-edge R&D projects in hydrogen systems and energy storage, focusing on integrating offshore renewables into the electrical grid. You will develop and test electrochemical and electrical models for electrolysers, fuel cells, and batteries. By closely collaborating with strategic leadership, you’ll help shape project details, identify future opportunities and propose emerging technologies within the industry.
You will also engage with key stakeholders from academia and industry, maintaining strong relationships that support business development and the wider hydrogen systems roadmap. Your role will involve publishing high-quality research papers and representing ORE Catapult at scientific and technical forums. In addition, you'll support health and safety standards, promoting a culture of safe work practices within the team.
What we are looking for
- A Master’s degree in a relevant scientific/engineering subject or equivalent research experience.
- Strong knowledge of hydrogen systems, electrolyser/fuel cell systems, and offshore renewable energy.
- Experience with electrochemical modelling, FEA, and electrical equivalent circuit modelling using tools like COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, or Python.
- Excellent communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to work under pressure.
Bonus Skills
- PhD/EngD in a related field.
- Expertise in battery energy storage systems and hydrogen electrolyser operations.
- Familiarity with industry standards for hydrogen systems and experience in laboratory settings.
Location
This role can be based at any of Blyth site with remote working possible. Travel to Blyth and other sites would be required as part of this role.
